In this post, I would like to introduce the upgrade path to latest VCP 2019 version – in the same solution track based on what certification you’re holding. If you want to see the upgrade path from the different solution track, please go here.
We recently have several important changes made to our VMware Certification. If you’re not aware, please also refer below.
– New VCP version in year designator
– Removing 2-year VCP Recertification Requirement and Expired VCP Rollback
So, with this combination, it may be confusing that which certification, either the one you’re currently holding or the one that eventually rolled back, can be used to upgrade to which certification by passing which exam, by be aware of which exams will be retiring in the near future!
The upgrade path is also included in the FAQ in the official announcement above but let me visualize those for more clear understanding.
First of all, the basic understanding of VCP upgrade in the same solution track, you can refer here. The only difference is the one struck through below.

So the guidelines here are:
– Can skip course attendance and vSphere Foundations Exam.
– One-version upgrade will acquire the next version VCP in the same solution track.
– Two-version upgrade will acquire two-next version VCP in the same solution track.
– Not capable of having Three or more version upgrade Three-version upgrade is available for upgrading to VCP 2019.
– Need to pass the Elective VCP Exam to re-certify.
– For DCV track only, Delta Exam can also be used.

So, if you’re going to upgrade to VCP 2019, it allows to upgrade from 3 older versions, instead of within 2 versions.
Now you have covered the all requirements to upgrade 🙂 Here are possible upgrade path available on each solution track with before and after the exam retirement.
First off with VCP-DCV solution track, before the exam retirement.
How to see the slide:
– “Latest Cert Holding” is the latest VCP certification you possibly holding now, or eventually rollbacked after April 2019.
– “Exam” is the possible exam you can take. You can only take the one in “Available Exams” category. The one with “Retiring” have possibility to retire soon.
– The green arrows shows the possible path. This can only go upwards or rightwards.
Please note that this is an example and not all exams has been released or retired. Please see the official announcement regarding which exam as been released and retired.
The latest certification you’re holding is either VCP6.5-DCV, VCP6-DCV, or VCP5-DCV, you can directly upgrade to VCP-DCV 2019 by passing the exam. You can either pass vSphere 6.7 exam or VCP6.5-DCV exam to be certified as VCP-DCV 2019. If you have VCP5-DCV expired but rollback after April, same path can be applied.
For VCP4, there is no direct upgrade path to VCP-DCV 2019 since it is more than 3 versions. Instead, VCP4 can upgrade directly to VCP6-DCV by passing its exam. If you have VCP4 expired but rollback after April, same path can be applied.
Unfortunately, VCP2 and 3 do not have the direct upgrade path to any certification. Need to take the new VCP candidate path by attending the course, take Foundations exam, and passing the exam.
This is the overall picture before any exam retirement.
Here is the path after the exam retirement.
VCP 2019 will be the only certification available to acquire, and the vSphere 6.7 exam is the only exam to acquire VCP 2019. There is no longer a direct upgrade path for VCP4 since the relative exams got retired. It needs to take the new VCP candidate path.
There will be VCP 2020 certification released on year 2020, and according new VCP will be released on that year also. And, older certification and exam will be retired on the same year, and so on.
The same methodology can be applied to the other solution track.
Next with VCP-DTM solution track, before the exam retirement.
The latest certification you’re holding is either VCP-DTM 2018, VCP7-DTM, or VCP6-DTM, you can directly upgrade to VCP-DTM 2019 by passing the exam. You can either pass Horizon 7.6 exam or VCP-DTM 2018 exam to be certified as VCP-DTM 2019. If you have VCP6-DTM expired but rollback after April, same path can be applied.
For VCP5-DT and VCP4-DT, there is no direct upgrade path to VCP-DTM 2019 since it is more than 3 versions. Instead, VCP4-DT can upgrade directly to VCP6-DTM by passing its exam. VCP5-DT has an option to upgrade directly to either VCP6-DTM or VCP7-DTM. If you have VCP4-DT or VCP5-DT expired but rollback after April, same path can be applied.
Here is the path after the exam retirement.
VCP 2019 will be the only certification available to acquire, and the Horizon exam is the only exam to acquire VCP 2019. There is no longer a direct upgrade path for VCP4-DT and VCP5-DT since the relative exams got retired. It needs to take the new VCP candidate path.
Here’s with VCP-CMA solution track, before the exam retirement.
The latest certification you’re holding is either VCP7-CMA, VCP6-CMA, or VCP-Cloud, you can directly upgrade to VCP-CMA 2019 by passing the exam. You can either pass vRA 7.5 exam or VCP7-CMA exam to be certified as VCP-CMA 2019. If you have VCP-Cloud expired but rollback after April, same path can be applied.
For CMA solution track, any older version can upgrade to the latest VCP 2019 directly. VCP-Cloud has an option to upgrade VCP6-CMA by passing its exam if you wish.
Here is the path after the exam retirement.
VCP 2019 will be the only certification available to acquire, and the vRA 7.5 exam is the only exam to acquire VCP 2019. But all older certifications have an path to upgrade to VCP 2019 directly.
Here’s with VCP-NV solution track, before the exam retirement.
Getting so much simpler, isn’t it? Since VCP6-NV is the only possible certification in NV solution track, it can directly upgrade to VCP-NV 2019 by passing the exam.
Here is the path after the exam retirement.
VCP 2019 will be the only certification available to acquire, and the NSX-V 6.4 exam or NSX-T exam is the exams that can be used to acquire VCP 2019.
Here’s with VCP-DW solution track, before the exam retirement.
Since VCP-DW 2018 is the only possible certification in DW solution track, it can directly upgrade to VCP-DW 2019 by passing the exam.
Here is the path after the exam retirement.
VCP 2019 will be the only certification available to acquire, and the Workspace ONE exam is the only exam to acquire VCP 2019.
