If you are going for a VCP for the first time, you basically have to first attend a Required Course, take vSphere Foundations Exam, and VCP Elective Exams at last. Below is the overall image of the steps.

Steps to acquire a VCP for the first time:

  1. Attend a required course
  2. Take vSphere Foundations Exam
    • Can take vSphere Foundations Exam v6.7. Version v6.5 and v6.0 exam is already retired but can be used as a requirement if you have taken and pass before.
    • For VCP-DW, it is not required to pass the vSphere Foundation Exam
    • For VCP-NV using NSX-T path, it is not required to pass the vSphere Foundation Exam
  3. Take VCP Elective Exam
    • Take the corresponding VCP Exam.
    • Exam can be the existing exam already available or possibly be a new exam going to be released this year.
    • There is a exam called Delta Exam for VCP-DCV but can NOT be used for the acquiring VCP for the first time.

Here is an example for VCP-DCV. Delta Exam is not applicable.

Here is an example for VCP-DTM.

Here is an example for VCP-CMA

Here is an example for VCP-NV. If you’re going for NSX-T path, it is not required to pass vSphere Foundations Exam. This can be acquired in 2 steps compared with NSX for vSphere path. Attend the required course and can go straight to VCP Exam.

For VCP-DW track, there is an exception that it does not requiring vSphere Foundations Exam shown on the image below. This can be acquired in 2 steps compared with other solution track. Attend the required course and can go straight to VCP Exam.
