How to access your virtual machines from your iPad

Our friends over at the Team Fusion Blog have an excellent post on how you can use TeamViewer to easily access your virtual machines sitting on your PC or Mac from  your Apple iPad or iPhone. And best of all, it is free.  This is a great way to not only access VMware Workstation virtual machines, but remotely connect to your host PC without dealing with firewall issues.

If you prefer to only access a VMware Workstation virtual machine and do not have firewall or encryption concerns, you can configure VMware Workstation to allow any VNC client to access the virtual machine remotely.  There is no need to install specialized VNC software in a virtual machine to do this.  To configure a VMware Workstation virtual machine as a VNC server:VMware Workstation VNC settings

  1. Select the virtual machine and choose VM > Settings.
  2. Click the Options tab and select Remote Display.
  3. Click Enable remote display.
  4. (Optional) Change the port number.  To connect to multiple virtual machines on the same host with a VNC client, specify a unique port number for each virtual machine.
  5. (Optional) Set a password for connecting to the virtual machine from a VNC client. Please note that the VNC remote connection is NOT encrypted.
  6. Click OK.

To connect to the virtual machines running VNC from your iPad or iPhone:

  1. Install any VNC client from the iOS App Store.
  2. Make sure the client is set for hextile encoding.
  3. Set the client to use all colors.
  4. When prompted for the VNC server name, enter the name or IP address of the host
computer and the port number. Use the format: <machine_name>:<port_number>
  5. Enter a password if you are prompted to do so.

For more detailed information, read the section titled “Using VNC for Remote Connections to a Virtual Machine” on page 228 of the VMware Workstation manual.

Buy VMware Workstation 7, Get VMware ThinApp Starter Edition For Free!

Learn how to virtualize applications!

The VMware Workstation team is pleased to announce that VMware ThinApp Starter Edition (Windows only, English only) is exclusively available at no cost to anyone who purchases or upgrades to VMware Workstation 7 from November 11, 2010 6pm PT through April 30, 2011.

Why are we bundling VMware ThinApp Starter Edition with VMware Workstation 7?

A large number of our customers use VMware Workstation to help them with their migration to Windows 7. We thought this would be a great, risk free way for VMware Workstation 7 customers to learn how application virtualization can make their migration even easier. Now with VMware ThinApp Starter Edition and VMware Workstation, you can experience the benefits of application virtualization without any risk of mucking up your PC.

After you install VMware ThinApp Starter Edition you can immediately package an application, typically a legacy Windows XP application, and run it on Windows 7 without the need to recode or retest the application.

Try virtualizing Internet Explorer 6 as a first step. A lot of our customers are doing this to maintain compatibility with existing applications as they migrate to Windows 7. This takes only minutes by clicking through the Setup Capture process to get a fully virtualized image for deployment on Windows 7. After installing VMware ThinApp Starter Edition:

  • Click through the Setup Capture steps.
  • Select Internet Explorer as shown here to virtualize IE 6 on your Windows XP system.

setup capture

Once you try VMware ThinApp Starter Edition, we hope you will be convinced that application virtualization can save porting costs, eliminate application conflicts, and simplify distribution of legacy applications on Windows 7.

Get Started Today!

Read the VMware ThinApp Starter Edition product page and the FAQs to get started. Topics covered include how do I get it, how do I use it, and much more.  For a quick start, watch the video:

How is the functionality different than VMware ThinApp Enterprise?

VMware ThinApp Starter Edition does not include Active Directory Integration and AppSync.

What’s the catch?

No catch.  VMware ThinApp Starter Edition is offered to VMware Workstation 7 customers for use by a single individual at no cost, and no risk.  The VMware ThinApp Starter Edition EULA allows for single user packaging of one or many applications. The EULA for this edition allows for the deployment of one or many of these applications on a single client. To redistribute the packaged applications to more than one client, you will need to purchase VMware ThinApp Enterprise product.

PHP developers can save time and money with Zend Studio 8 and Workstation 7

The VMware Workstation team is very excited about our partnership with Zend, the PHP Company, to bring the full benefits of virtualization to PHP developers. We are committed to increasing the productivity of software developers at organizations of all sizes. That’s why we  spent the last few monthly working closely with the great team at Zend to ensure the newly launched Zend Studio 8 includes out-of –the box integration with VMware Workstation 7.

Zen Studio’s integration with VMware Workstation enables PHP developers to enhance their development and testing processes by running and debugging their applications in a virtual, production-like environment. Developers can set their development server to a local virtual machine that mirrors the production environment, and deploy their code directly onto that virtual server from the Zend Studio interface, thereby eliminating potential errors and speeding up the testing and debugging cycles. Developers can run their development and testing environments on to a single PC by running multiple environments at the same time without rebooting. This eliminates the need to purchase additional hardware and allows those old machines sitting under everyone’s desk to finally be recycled. Furthermore, the development and quality assurance teams can create virtual machines that are shared across the organization, minimizing the time spent doing repetitive configuration tasks.

Try it out today!

1. Download VMware Workstation 7 Free Trial.

2. Download Zend Studio 8 Free Trial.

3. Download a sample Zend Server virtual machine (username/password: studio/logitech) or Create a custom virtual machine with Zend Server.

4. In Zend Studio specify the virtual machine setting in “Run | Run Configurations | PHP Application on VM” and you are ready to deploy and debug your PHP code on the virtual server. Then select "Run | Run as | PHP Application on VM".

5. Read the Zend Studio 8 User Guide for more information.

6. Visit the Zend Studio 8 forum to discuss how virtualization can make you more productive.
