We’re excited to announce that VMware Site Recovery Manager (SRM) and vSphere Replication 8.3 are now generally available. The new releases were announced on March 10, 2020, in tandem with VMware’s Application Modernization event. This automation software integrates with an underlying replication technology to minimize downtime in case of disasters via automated orchestration of recovery plans. It also allows you to conduct non-disruptive testing of your disaster recovery plans.
For greater customer flexibility and choice, the software integrates seamlessly with VMware vSphere Replication and supports replication solutions from VMware storage partners. It also natively leverages the benefits of VMware vSphere and VMware Cloud Foundation.
Now that SRM 8.3 is available, let’s review some of the key features and highlights.
Experience Simplified Disaster Recovery with VMware SRM 8.3’s New Features
Support for VMware vSphere Virtual Volumes (vVols)
After listening to your feedback and requests, we’re excited to share that SRM now integrates with vVols for improved manageability and simplicity. SRM 8.3 supports Virtual Machines (VM) on vVols replicated with array-based replication. Several array vendors are design partners for the integration including Pure, HPE 3par and Nimble, and more will be added soon! Compatibility can be checked, here.
Accelerated Protection
In ever-changing environments, you need peace of mind that your data is protected. This can be achieved with SRM 8.3’s automatic detection and protection of VMs created in vVols Replication groups. If you create a new VM on a datastore that is replicated and protected in SRM, the VM is automatically added to an existing protection group. SRM applies automatic protection to new or existing VM for which the Storage Policy Base Management (SPBM) policy is changed to a vVols policy for replication and to a Replication group protected with SRM.
Enhanced Automation
In SRM 8.3, you’ll find new tools to augment automation and enhance UI for easier management and visibility into your disaster recovery solution. From orchestration workflows to recovery of network and security settings, you can automate it all.
But Wait, There’s More
We’ve only scratched the surface with the new updates and features listed above. You can also expect the following from SRM 8.3:
- Seamless disk resizing
- Optimized vSphere replication performance
- Security Enhancements
- New capabilities for the vROps Management packs
