Steven Rostedt

As a former VMware employee, Steven had worked on the Linux kernel, an endeavor he initiated in 1998 while earning his masters and in a professional capacity, since 2001. Steven is one of the original developers of the PREEMPT_RT patch which turns Linux into a true real-time operating system. He is the original developer and current maintainer of Ftrace (the official tracer of the Linux kernel) and has also created an open source user space tool to interact with Ftrace called trace-cmd, in addition to a GUI for that tool called KernelShark. Part of Steven’s role as an Open Source Engineer at VMware was leading a development to rewrite KernelShark and extend it beyond just the Linux kernel and promoting Open Source both inside and outside the company. He has given talks all over the world on various aspects of Linux and serves on the Linux Foundation Technical Advisory Board and the Linux Plumbers Program Committee.
