Need an excuse to escape the depths of winter? Join the open source community to celebrate the Southern California Linux Expo’s (SCaLE) 18th birthday from March 5-8 in Pasadena. As always, SCaLE 18x will feature a variety of presentations, lightning talks and community events. But in a much-anticipated addition, the VMware Open Source team will bring back Tabs vs. Spaces for its fourth and final round.
So, make sure you stop by our booth to vote and make your voice heard on software’s great debate before it’s too late. While you’re at it, come see us at a few of the presentations previewed below as well.
1). Simplifying the Build Process with Cloud Native Buildpacks
Thursday, March 5, 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM
Head back to school with Kevin Takenaga and Aaron Meza and explore the CNCF sandbox project, Cloud Native Buildpacks (CNB). CNB takes source code, detects the language, compiles based upon the detection process, and prepares a runnable container image that is OCI compliant. This tutorial will teach you how to use CNB to accelerate application development.
2). Workshop: Introduction to Containers and Kubernetes
Ready to dive a little deeper into the world of Kubernetes? VMware’s Marissa Bosche and Ryan Schneider teach the principles of a cloud native infrastructure and then lead the class in deploying their first cluster. If you’re early in your cloud native journey, this is the workshop for you.
3). Applying Kubernetes in Edge and IoT Applications – Challenges and Solutions
Friday, March 6, 3:00 to 3:45 PM
VMware’s Steven Wong and Malini Bhandaru will discuss operating at the edge and whether Kubernetes is adaptable as a control plane for managing and operating workloads and devices in these environments. They’ll review comparisons with cloud computing as well as the unique challenges in terms of security, lifecycle management, resource constraints and more.
4). Beyond a Single Mesh – Discovery, Identity and Federation
Friday, March 6, 5:00 to 5:45 PM
Service meshes are growing in popularity and maturity, and Venil Noronha and Deepa Kalani have a first row seat to that growth. In this session, they’ll discuss the ways in which this growth is creating new sets of challenges that necessitate a service mesh federation. They’ll also explore challenges that are common to various service mesh projects and present solutions like Hamlet that require collaboration between different open source projects.
5). Writing Real-Time Applications on Linux with PREEMPT_RT
Saturday, March 7, 3:00 to 4:00 PM
Steven Rostedt’s presentations are always highly anticipated, and this one is no different. In it, Steven will discuss what real-time application developers must know and understand. This is a must attend for anyone that wishes to develop time-critical applications, regardless of if that’s in robotics, safety critical systems or even musical recording.
6). Building Community for Your Company’s OSS Projects

Building a community around your company’s open source project is no easy task, but as Pivotal’s Dawn Foster explains here, there are a few key actions leaders can take to encourage successful community building within the enterprise. Join Dawn to explore these do’s and don’ts and leave with a few practical next steps.
Sunday, March 8, 4:00 to 6:00 PM
John Hawley’s Ansible 101 is the capstone to the Sysadmin tutorial track. In it, he’ll discuss the use of Ansible to automate and manage data center configuration at scale. This hands-on tutorial will involve two VMs and provide a good starting point for those interested in exploring Ansible further.
