Open source leaders from far and wide will convene in California’s famous Sonoma Valley for The Linux Foundation’s Open Source Leadership Summit, taking place March 6-8. The goal of the Open Source Leadership Summit is to foster innovation, growth and collaboration among the corporations working in open source and the landmark projects that are pushing this field forward. Below is a full list of VMware happenings at this year’s Open Source Leadership Summit.
- “Don’t Own Projects, Lead Them” – Tuesday, March 6, 2:50 p.m. – 3:20 p.m.
VMware’s Chief Open Source Officer Dirk Hohndel will talk about ways to ensure the broader open source community is heard, encouraged and brought in when starting and managing new projects. Dirk will emphasize the importance of the open source community owning a project, rather than a single corporation.
- “Beyond Code: Secret Ingredients to Successful Open Source Practices” – Wednesday, March 7, 2:00 p.m. – 2:30 p.m.
Director of Portfolio Marketing Suzanne Ambiel and Sr. Open Source Program Manager Lauren Britton will unveil the five secrets to successful open source practices that go way beyond just code. Drawing on the experience of hundreds of open source project requests, Suzanne and Lauren will provide a fast-paced checklist of what not to ignore and tips on how to get tasks right the first time.
- “Panel Discussion: Why Marketing Matters: For Open Source Projects, Companies Using Open Source Technologies and Companies Selling Them” – Wednesday, March 7, 3:40 p.m. – 4:10 p.m.
Wendy Cartee, cloud-native applications marketing, will moderate this panel discussion where speakers will discuss the role of marketing in open source, provide examples of how marketing powers open source projects and offer insights around how marketing teams from enterprises and open source projects can partner closer together to achieve greater results.
- “Change” – Wednesday, March 7, 4:20 p.m. – 4:50 p.m.
Darren Hart, director of VMware’s Open Source Technology Center, will discuss the concept of structured changes in the context of revision control best practices, drawing from his own experiences as a contributor, maintainer and open source mentor.
- “Tackling Compliance for Containers with Tern” – Wednesday, March 7, 5:00 p.m. – 5:30 p.m.
In this talk, Open Source Engineer Nisha Kumar will discuss some best practices on how to build compliant containers from the ground up, how Tern, an open source project, attempts to extract package metadata from an existing container and how the container distribution ecosystem can improve for the benefit of everyone working with containers.
- “Zen and the Business Art of Open Source Maintenance” – Thursday, March 8, 1:50 p.m. – 2:20 p.m.
Open Source Engineer Tim Pepper will explore similarities and differences in open source versus traditional business control dynamics and discuss strategies for successful open source project leadership.
