On the Road Again: Open Source Summit North America 2022

Austin in June will be just as hot as the news off the presses this year at Open Source Summit North America 2022! This year’s summit is occurring in person in Austin, Texas and online wherever and whenever you are in the world. You can expect great networking opportunities and eye-opening sessions during these action-packed four days, from June 21 to 24.

VMware is a silver sponsor of this year’s event, and several VMware open source experts will be presenting and in attendance, including VMware Director of Open Source Marketing and Strategy, Suzanne Ambiel; Director of Open Source Community Strategy, Dawn Foster; and Senior Staff Solution Engineer, Corby Page, among others.

Does Your OSPO Help or Hinder Contributions? – Tuesday, June 21, 2:05 pm CDT

The key to any OSPO’s success is openness. Are you open to new ideas? Are you open to listening to everyone? Is your organization open-minded about the amazing solutions that originate in the open source community? In this session, you’ll learn how to best manage your company’s OSPO and enact policies that create positive and strategic relationships between employee contributors, your company and the open source community. This informative half hour, led by Dawn Foster, will leave you with actionable tips on how to be a considerate open source contributor and how to improve employees’ open source experience.

What Makes a Build Reproducible? – Tuesday, June 21, 4:55 pm CDT

Depending on your expectations and expertise, “reproducible build” can mean several different things. In this session, you’ll learn more about the three qualities that make a build truly reproducible:

  1. Deterministic build process
  2. Recreatable artifacts
  3. Binary, or bit-for-bit, reproducible

VMware open source engineers Rose Judge and Joshua Lock will place these definitions within the context of software supply chain security and why reproducible builds are important to ensuring trustworthiness and confidence in shipping code.

The TRUE Cost of Open Source – Wednesday, June 22, 2022, 11:50 am CDT

You know the true value of open source. Unfortunately, some companies view open source as a free resource, and thus don’t allocate enough time, thought, or resources to their program. In this session, Suzanne Ambiel will speak about how OSPOs can convince organizations to invest in the right projects and how to elevate an open source program to a strategic partnership.

Overcoming Imposter Syndrome to Become a Conference Speaker! – Thursday, June 23, 2:05 pm CDT

“Just imagine everyone in the audience is wearing a funny hat.” Or, “Pick a ceiling tile at the back of the room and stare at it.” If you’re seeking better advice on how to overcome imposter syndrome and conference public speaking fears, Dawn Foster’s session for you. While the open source community is a friendly and welcoming one, it’s still sometimes difficult to present your great ideas confidently. This session is all about feeling empowered when you’re preparing for and presenting at an open source conference. You’ll learn how to select a great topic you’re passionate about, how to title your session and craft your bio, plus everything you need to know about writing and preparing for your big talk.

Sharing Is NOT Caring: Stop Sharing Your Kubernetes Cluster Credentials – Wednesday, June 22, 2:35 pm CDT

Kubernetes users are constantly running into authentication challenges. With Pinniped, those challenges are no more! Sharing credentials can put your system and even your entire platform at risk. Because it doesn’t use any user-specific credentials, Pinniped securely distributes kubeconfigs among users. VMware Community Manager Nigel Brown and Staff Developer Advocate Leigh Capili will discuss Pinniped, an open source solution, and how its architectural components solve Kubernetes authentication hurdles.

Peeling Back the Layers of Storage – Wednesday, June 22, 3:45 pm CDT

Linux storage systems can go from somewhat simple to incredibly complex in the blink of an eye. Tune in or sit in on this session for a high-level overview of increasingly complex storage systems, from physical storage all the way up to full-layered storage. VMware Open Source Developer John Hawley will impart practical knowledge on how to manage block, volume and file systems and how to achieve fly disk compression and deduplication, among other actions.

Tutorial: Introduction to Supply Chain Choreography With Cartographer – Thursday, June 23, 2:05 pm CDT

Cartographer is a key tool that simplifies DIY snowflake pipelines and creates a modern path to production. After this Cartographer tutorial, led by Corby Page and Cora Iberkleid, you’ll have a working knowledge of the tool and how you can apply it to your own application deployments.
