Get Ready for Open Source Summit 2021 With VMware!

The end of summer means it’s almost time for cozy sweaters, autumn leaves…and Open Source Summit North America 2021! From September 26th – 30th, developers, technologists and industry experts will have the opportunity to exchange ideas on the latest trends in open source and open collaboration, while learning how to better navigate the open source landscape. This year’s conference is taking place in Seattle and virtually, so attendees can join in on the fun from anywhere, at any time.

VMware joins Open Source Summit (OSS) 2021 as a Silver sponsor and several of our experts will be sharing their insights and best practices — including the keynote presentation from Linus Torvalds, Creator of Linux & Git, and Dirk Hohndel, VMware’s Vice President & Chief Open Source Officer — as well as presentations of their work in the open source community. Here’s a breakdown of our hosted sessions that you won’t want to miss:

Bridges, Bonds, and Taps – Going Beyond eth0  – Monday, September 27th, 2021, 1:30 PM PDT

There is a lot more to networking than just getting an address via DHCP to get on the internet and start getting things done. In this tutorial, John Hawley will start broadening the understanding of some of the more common, useful networking systems in Linux. The tutorial will also make use of pre-canned virtual machines to help guide and illustrate specific concepts and situations in an environment where experimenting with the networking stack shouldn’t cause issues. Attendees should expect to leave the session with a solid groundwork for these concepts and how to use them, allowing for a deeper understanding of these useful ideas already present in Linux.

Getting Started with Getting Started: How to Engage New Users – Monday, September 27th, 2021, 3:50 PM PDT

How do you effectively demonstrate your project’s value to end users and potential contributors in a crowded and ever-changing OSS landscape? Through many months of exploratory interviews, tutorial development and user testing, the Knative community has managed to increase the satisfaction of their “Quickstart” experience by over 100% (as reported by end users). VMware’s Omer Bensaadon and IBM’s Carlos Santana will provide attendees with best-practices for effectively attracting and retaining new users to their Open Source community as well as rallying the community around this shared objective.

Navigating Open Source Project Risk  – Monday, September 27th, 2021, 4:15 PM PDT

Most decisions boil down to an assessment of risk and making tradeoffs, and deciding whether to use or contribute to an open source project are no different. We don’t always spend enough time thinking about the risks associated with how we’re using open source projects. In this talk, Dawn Foster will compare the risk between projects under neutral foundations vs. those owned by individual companies; explain how governance impacts risk for leadership selection, decision-making processes and communication; and more. Attendees will walk away with practical advice about how to assess risk and evaluate projects for themselves or their organization, while also learning about ways to decrease risk in their own projects.

What is new in KernelShark two – Monday, September 27th, 2021, 4:50 PM PDT

KernelShark has undergone multiple changes since its creation in 2009. In this discussion, Steven Rostedt will review what KernelShark has always done and demonstrate the features of the new plugins that are only available in version 2. No need to be a kernel developer to enjoy this talk — the discussion will stay very high-level, but still be useful for the more experienced developers.

Getting Over Your Imposter Syndrome to Become a Conference Speaker – Wednesday, September 29th, 2021, 10:30 AM PDT

Speaking at an open source conference might seem intimidating, but Dawn Foster is here to provide some resources to help everyone feel included and welcome as a conference speaker. In this discussion, she’ll answer questions like:

  • How do you decide what topic to cover?
  • What can you do to help your topic stand out?
  • How do you prevent imposter syndrome from getting in the way of your success as a speaker?

Additionally, Dawn will explain how to select a topic and a conference to speak at, how to write a title and abstract that will increase the chances of being accepted and much more.

Back to the Drawing Board: Building Containers with SBoMs – Wednesday, September 29th, 2021, 11:30 AM PDT

Software industry concerns like software supply chain security, data and legal compliance and build repeatability can be addressed with an SBoM, or a Software Bill of Materials. Although this is generally straightforward for software built from scratch, 99% of software used today relies on Open Source components. In this discussion, Nisha Kumar will go back to the basics of building containers, explain the importance of generating SBoMs at container build time, and demonstrate how tools like Tern, Buildah and OCI specification can yield more accurate and consistent SBoMs.
