Horizon 6.0 – Introducing Virtual SAN Integration

On behalf of everyone on the End-User Computing (EUC) team at VMware, I’m proud to bring you another exciting product announcement from EUC.

View 5.3.1 was introduced early in the first quarter of 2014 to support Virtual SAN 5.5 GA. As you may have read recently, VMware announced the release of Horizon 6 (with View). With this release, we are continuing to expand the Virtual SAN integration capabilities delivered by Horizon. The Virtual SAN integration capabilities introduced in Horizon 6 deliver the following benefits to our customers:

  • Reduces CAPEX cost of storage by up to 50% when compared to the cost of using an external shared storage array based on magnetic disks
  • A package that contains both View and Virtual SAN
  • A simple three-step setup and management workflow
  • Performance capabilities similar to that of an all flash/all SSD external storage system

Microsoft Lync 2013 in View Windows 8.0 and 8.1 Desktops

It gives me great pleasure to announce that Horizon 6 with View will be adding support for Microsoft Lync 2013 VDI integration on Windows 8.0 and 8.1 desktops. In View 5.2, VMware added support for Lync 2013 Client capabilities, including VoIP and videoconferencing, in View desktops running Windows 7 SP1. With Horizon 6 with View, customers will be able to run the Lync 2013 Client with full functionality inside Windows 8.0 and 8.1 virtual desktops as well.

Customers can use View PCoIP technology to deliver an optimal user experience when accessing their View desktop. Once inside the View desktop, users can fully leverage the Lync 2013 Client to communicate and collaborate using its rich VoIP and videoconferencing capabilities.

Working with Horizon Mirage Edge Server

VMware Mirage 4.4 was released in March 2014! This latest release of Mirage introduces several new features. Mirage Edge Server is one of the most exciting ones. With Mirage Edge Server, remote end users can securely connect their devices back to the corporate network, where Horizon Mirage is centrally located, without going through a VPN. Saving this extra step creates a non-disruptive experience for those remote end users.

Recovering Devices Through Enforce Layers in Horizon Mirage Web Manager

At times, users might experience problems with their desktop operations. The first issue to consider would be changes to the files and registry settings. These changes can occur when users, or some applications, install software on their desktops. To resolve these changes, use the Enforce Layers process in Web Manager to enforce, or reassign, the base layer or app layer that was originally provisioned by Horizon Mirage.

This example shows how to enforce a layer to recover a desktop with this type of problem.

Note: To complete this task, you must be a Web Manager Help Desk or Protection Manager. In this example, Protection Manager is used.

1. Open the Horizon Web Manager as the Protection Manager. Figure 1 displays what you see when you log in to the Web Manager as a Protection Manager.

Customizing the View Portal Page After HTML Access Has Been Installed: Horizon View 5.3

HTML Access is extremely handy for always-on-the-move VMware Horizon View users. But keep in mind that installing HTML Access in your Horizon View deployment will automatically disable your previously customized View Portal page and replace it with a new portal page that contains both an icon for downloading View Client and an icon for accessing your virtual desktop via HTML Access.

Unfortunately, any customizations to the original View Portal page are not automatically included in the new portal. But, on the bright side, you can customize the new portal page using essentially the same technique you used to customize the original View Portal page. (Check out Customizing the View Portal in Horizon View 5.3 to find out how to customize the original View Portal page.)

Note: HTML Access 2.2 is available only as part of the VMware Horizon View 5.3 Feature Pack 1.

Using Horizon Mirage for Windows 7 Migration of Windows XP Endpoints with Disk Encryption

Microsoft ends support for Windows XP on April 8, 2014, so it is an urgent requirement for businesses of all sizes to migrate from Windows XP to Windows 7. VMware Horizon Mirage provides centralized image management for Windows desktops with enhanced OS migration capabilities. It is quite straightforward to migrate your Windows XP endpoints to Windows 7 with Horizon Mirage. However, you need a different methodology if your endpoint devices are encrypted with a third-party full-disk-encryption tool.

This blog tells you how to migrate to Windows 7 using Horizon Mirage without decrypting the endpoint devices that are encrypted by a third-party full-disk-encryption tool. This blog uses Sophos SafeGuard Enterprise 5.5 as an example.

Using the Protection Manager Role with Horizon Mirage Web Manager

VMware Horizon Mirage is software used to centralize desktops in the datacenter for management and protection purposes. When Horizon Mirage is first introduced to an organization, each device must be backed up, creating a copy of it on the Mirage Server in the form of a Centralized Virtual Desktop, or CVD. You can then centrally manage the device.

The Mirage Management Console is the administrative interface used to manage endpoints. Administrative tasks in Horizon Mirage include

  • Updating
  • Patching by means of layer updates
  • Backing up (centralizing)
  • Troubleshooting
  • Restoring desktops
