Here at VMware, we believe the next big area for innovation in the software-defined datacenter is software-defined storage (SDS). VMworld 2013 is our opportunity to introduce Virtual SAN (VSAN), a new technology that converts direct attached storage into high performance, resilient, and flexible shared storage designed for virtual machines. Using only three servers you can create a shared datastore and start enjoying these benefits; stay tuned for more details. If you are attending VMworld, then there are quite a few opportunities to learn more about VSAN.
Keynotes
Monday Aug 26, 9am: In the Day 1 VMworld General Session, you can hear VMware CEO Pat Gelsinger talk about VSAN and how it fits into our greater SDDC vision and strategy. You can also watch it live, or watch the recording.
Tuesday Aug 27, 9am: VMworld General Session, Day 2. Following up from the previous day, you can see VMware COO Carl Eschenbach show a demo of the SDDC in action, including a portion focusing on the SDS with VSAN
Breakout Sessions
Monday Aug 26, 11:30am: STO5715-S – Software-defined Storage – The Next Phase in the Evolution of Enterprise Storage. In the session we will review what VMware’s vision for software-defined storage is, the trends leading to it and key benefits.
Monday Aug 26, 1pm: STO5391 VMware Virtual SAN. Learn about the fundamentals of VSAN from some key members of the product team
Tuesday Aug 27, 2:30pm: STO4798 Software Defined Storage: The VCDX Way. Leveraging software-defined storage is key to unleashing the full benefits of the software-defined data-center. But as with any new technology, one must understand how software-defined storage fits into their current datacenter architecture. Join us to learn how to design, implement and integrate software-defined storage solutions, the VCDX way
Tuesday Aug 27, 1pm: STO5027 VMware Virtual SAN Technical Best practices. The session, co-presented by Cormac Hogan, will provide all necessary information to make you successful with VMware Virtual SAN
Wednesday Aug 28, 8:30am: EUC4688 – Lowering TCO for Virtual Desktops with VMware View and VMware Virtual SAN. This session discusses how the integration between VMware View and VMware VMware Virtual SAN can address the requirements of desktop virtualization while lowering the Total Cost of Ownership. In addition the session will also include a demo of the integration between VMware View and VMware Virtual SAN
VMware Partner Breakout Sessions

Group Discussions
Wednesday Aug 28, 2:30pm: STO1001-GD – VSAN with Cormac Hogan and VMware R&D Engineers. This is an opportunity to come along and have an intimate discussion about all things VSAN. Remember that these discussions are limited to 50 people, so sign up as soon as you can.
Monday Aug 26, 5:30pm: STO1004GD vSphere Flash Read Cache, VSAN, VMware Virsto, Software Defined Storage Architecture with Rawlinson Rivera. This is in the same format as the above session, except you’ll get to talk about our other storage technologies as well.
Panel Discussions
Monday Aug 26, 5:30pm: STO4973 VMware Virtual SAN Panel Discussion. This session is a panel discussion comprised of several customers that participated in the VMware Virtual SAN private beta. They will discuss their experiences with VMware Virtual SAN, specific use cases that were relevant to each customer, and answer any questions that are posed to them
Tuesday Aug 27, 12:30pm and Thursday Aug 29, noon: STO5559 – The Future of Storage : A Panel Discussion. In this panel discussion, hosted by Chuck Hollis and featuring some luminaries of the storage world, we will discuss technology trends and advances that are shaping the next generation data center architectures.
Hands-On Labs (HOL)
The best way to learn about VSAN is to try it out in the Hands-On Labs. VSAN is highlighted in the lab HOL-SDC-1308 – Virtual Storage Solutions, which is available all throughout the conference.
VMware Booth
If you visit the VMware booth, you’ll get a chance to talk directly with someone on the VSAN team and see some demos.
