In October of last year, we announced the limited Initial Availability (IA) of the Cloud Consumption Interface (CCI) in vSphere+ for early testing and feedback. Today, we are thrilled to announce the expansion of access to this Initial Availability of CCI for all vSphere+ customers. This is a significant milestone in our journey – enabling an abstracted consumer experience built on Kubernetes APIs on top of vSphere.
The Cloud Consumption Interface offers a user-friendly cloud experience for both consumers and providers of Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS). For consumers, it provides a graphical web console, a common IaaS API endpoint, and a CLI for self-service access to vSphere-based resources such as virtual machines, disks, and Kubernetes clusters and other services. For providers, it enables the definition of regions, application resource envelopes, and resource access permissions for consumers. This interface is powered by Aria Automation and leverages Supervisor IaaS services, extending access to Kubernetes-based IaaS APIs in the vSphere platform. Users can seamlessly use familiar tools like kubectl and IaaS object YAML definitions via Single Sign-On from a cloud endpoint. Ultimately, Cloud Consumption Interface empowers enterprises to build applications more efficiently on vSphere while retaining control over their infrastructure, offering agility and modern capabilities.

CCI and vSphere 8 Update 2
The timing of CCI’s full availability is particularly exciting as it aligns with the Q3 release of VMware vSphere 8 Update 2. This new release introduces numerous new features and capabilities, including valuable enhancements. When combined with CCI, vSphere 8U2 brings even more power to your hands. CCI’s true potential lies in its ability to deliver self-service capabilities not only for Tanzu Kubernetes Grid but also for all other services running on the vSphere platform. With the enhancements introduced in vSphere 8U2, a new level of efficiency is unlocked, making it easier than ever to build and manage VM pipelines. The new self-service VM Image Service enables users to create and share custom-built VM images using Kubernetes API, while vSphere 8U2 also extends VM Service options including Windows VM support. These improvements transform your SDDC (Software Defined Datacenters) investment into a contemporary platform, offering your users self-service capabilities akin to those found in public cloud environments.
