In modern IT environments, provisioning workloads is the easy part. The real operational challenge begins on Day 2, where a single configuration gap across thousands of workloads can turn an everyday oversight into a major compliance audit failure or a headline-making data breach.
As enterprises scale across cloud environments, configurations quietly drift from their secure baselines. A temporary firewall tweak, an untracked ad-hoc hotfix, or a delayed patch cycle does more than degrade performance—it creates severe compliance vulnerabilities. Historically, organizations have relied on manual interventions and siloed scripting, often requiring multiple engineers to abandon active projects for weeks just to gather spreadsheets and prove compliance during audits. To keep pace with the speed of business, IT organizations need an automated, scalable approach.
We are excited to announce VMware Compliance and Configuration Management, an Advanced Service for VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF).

Figure 1. Announcing VMware Compliance and Configuration Management.
VMware Compliance and Configuration Management uses VMware Salt’s remote execution engine to deliver automated infrastructure hardening at enterprise scale. While traditional compliance tools only reveal violations weeks after the fact, event-driven enforcement detects unauthorized file changes or exposed ports immediately and auto-remediates them. Now offered as a standalone Advanced Service for VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF). Previously, VMware Salt was part of VMware Advanced Cyber Compliance (ACC), but is now available as a standalone Advanced Service to simplify adoption. The solution eliminates third-party tool sprawl, and bridges the operational gap between security identifying a vulnerability and IT remediating it.
Built for Scale and Speed
Here is a look into how VMware Compliance and Configuration Management empowers platform and security teams to standardize workloads and automate compliance seamlessly.
Powered by a highly scalable, event-driven architecture, the solution can handle thousands of workloads simultaneously making large-scale compliance and configuration execution straightforward across enterprise fleets.

Figure 2. VMware Compliance and Configuration Management provides event-driven hardening based on compliance or custom benchmarks.
The solution operates a control plane and agent model, enhanced by enterprise management capabilities:
- The VMware Salt Server: The enterprise server that provides an API and user interface for centralized management, role-based access control (RBAC), and reporting for workloads.
- The Salt Master: The central command hub or control plane that dictates configurations, stores policies, and orchestrates actions across an environment.
- Salt Minions: Lightweight agents installed on target workloads. The minions are supported on Linux Distributions (CentOS, Red Hat, SUSE, Ubuntu), macOS, and Windows.
- The Event Bus: A high-speed encrypted communication channel between Masters (control plane) and Minions (managed nodes).
This real-time responsiveness allows the solution to detect an issue and remediate it quickly, helping reduce Mean Time to Resolution (MTTR) for workload failures.
Compliance and Security
VMware Compliance and Configuration Management is event-driven, so security doesn’t wait for scheduled audit cycles. The moment a workload drifts from the established baseline, the service automatically triggers hardening policies to help bring workloads back into compliance. Through its advanced compliance and vulnerability services, the solution transforms security from a reactive chore into a continuous, automated process.
- Automated Benchmark Scanning: VMware Compliance and Configuration Management scans workloads against supported security benchmarks from accredited standards, such as the Center for Internet Security (CIS), Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA), and custom benchmarks. It provides visibility into which systems pass or fail, and specifically where vulnerabilities may lie.
- Event-Driven Remediation: Because VMware Compliance and Configuration Management is event-driven, it can do more than simply notify administrators. The system can remediate any compliance findings to harden and bring workloads back into compliance.
- Vulnerability Management: Beyond compliance frameworks, VMware Compliance and Configuration Management helps manage active vulnerabilities. By ingesting 3rd party security scans or vulnerability data, it can swiftly deploy patches and updates across thousands of nodes.
Configuration Management to Eliminate Drift
Configuration drifts are the subtle, undocumented changes that accumulate across systems over time that pose a major threat to reliability and audit readiness. A developer tweaking a server setting to test a patch or a forgotten manual update can result in environments that look nothing like their original blueprints or baseline configurations.
VMware Compliance and Configuration Management addresses this through declarative configuration management:
- Desired State: IT teams define baseline security policies once, and the solution automatically enforces them across the enterprise using YAML or JSON. Instead of writing scripts detailing how to configure a system, you simply define what the system should look like. Changes can be reconciled automatically based on needs and configuration.
- Continuous Reconciliation: VMware Compliance and Configuration Management can help keep workloads from drifting from a desired state and bring them back to a known good and hardened configuration. This can happen automatically or on a scheduled basis depending upon how the system is configured.
Accelerating Compliance
By unifying configuration management and automated compliance into a single solution, VMware Compliance and Configuration Management eliminates third-party tool sprawl and closes the operational gap between security and IT operations. Platform engineers can define secure workload states once and enforce them continuously, transforming weeks of manual spreadsheet gathering into quick audit reporting. Ultimately, the service delivers the continuous, event-driven hardening organizations need to reduce risk, maintain daily compliance, and scale with confidence.
