We are excited to share the news that Flatcar Container Linux by Kinvolk is now officially supported on vSphere. Flatcar Container Linux is a popular container OS and the perfect drop-in replacement to CoreOS Container Linux.
CoreOS Container Linux will be end-of-life on May 26, 2020, so users who want to receive ongoing maintenance and security updates should migrate to a supported guest OS by that date. With VMware and Kinvolk’s collaboration to bring Flatcar Container Linux to vSphere, Flatcar is a supported path forward for CoreOS users.
To find out how to run Flatcar Container Linux as your guest OS in vSphere, please see the documentation on running Flatcar in VMware and on how to update a VM from CoreOS to Flatcar Container Linux. The VMware Compatibility Guide (VCG) echos the support for Flatcar Linux. Running Flatcar Container Linux is supported in vSphere 6.7 and higher.
VMware and Kinvolk are collaborating to further enhance the user experience for Flatcar Linux as a guest OS, and as a foundation for Kubernetes in vSphere environments.
VMware provides full support to its customers deploying Flatcar. Kinvolk offers subscriptions for enterprise support, please email [email protected] to discuss a Flatcar Container Linux Subscription.
