Introduction
Thanks for tuning in to Part 2 of this blog series about IT evolution. Part 1 covered mobile device management and how it became a driving force behind the consumerization of information technology. The dichotomy between employees’ easy, simple, streamlined “home experience” and the difficult, complex, roundabout “work experience” left consumers demanding better and simpler process flows in their corporate lives.
In Part 2, we’ll discuss how the challenges in 2020 increased pressure on organizations to offer end-user computing solutions that work from anywhere. If 2020 proved anything, it’s that agility is now the number one differentiator of successful modern businesses.
Part 2: 2020’s influence on end-user computing
What do all the evolutions from Part 1 have in common? Put a different way, why did these changes occur? In short, technological innovation drove cultural changes in consumer choice that ultimately led to questions that old ways of doing business couldn’t answer. Before 2020, the option to work from anywhere was already high on employees’ wish lists. Some organizations aggressively pursued this goal; others acted slowly. 2020 provided an immediate measuring stick of how effective these evolutions were at each organization.
Last year, most companies were forced to make very difficult decisions in a very short amount of time. While 2020 certainly sped up certain IT trends, most of them were not completely new. What was so jarring for many organizations was the immediate adoption of these trends. Employees switched to remote work overnight. Business travel became a thing of the past. Services for customers were performed over web conference. IT groups felt the weight of all these new pressures immediately. CEOs all over the world called up their IT leaders with the following questions:
- Will our employees be able to access all their company applications remotely?
- How are we dealing with identity and access?
- How will employees meet and collaborate remotely?
- Do we have the infrastructure (compute, network, etc.) to support all of this?
- Is everything secure?
VMware pioneers the technology that makes the work-from-anywhere strategy a reality. Workspace ONE UEM secures remote access to corporate resources. VMware Horizon ensures employees can access a host of virtual environments and applications from anywhere. Workspace ONE Access creates a secure and seamless application experience. Workspace ONE Intelligence gives IT professionals insights into all this activity in addition to the automation power to simplify the process.
A parting note – It’s a mistake to view these tech-driven transformations as purely technical. The majority of buyers don’t buy a new device or upgrade to a new technology merely for the “cool factor.” Teams invest in technology because it makes their lives easier, more streamlined or more organized.
Parts of the world are returning to a new normal, and the work-from-anywhere movement is here to stay. If your technology infrastructure held up well under 2020’s challenges, how could it be improved? If it was unsuccessful, where were the weak points? Not sure where to start? VMware Professional Services for Digital Workspace can help you achieve your desired future state or improve what you already have, whether that means delivering a hybrid or fully remote experience for your employees.
