Demystifying VMware Workspace ONE Designs

Congratulations, you’ve made the decision to modernize your organizations’ desktop and laptop management with VMware Workspace ONE®. What goes into designing a digital workspace solution? Would you know where to start? What questions should you ask? What dependencies do you need to be aware of?

Enter the Workspace ONE Design Handbook. This handbook aims to help organizations like yours, who have decided to adopt Workspace ONE technologies, get the most value out of the solution. It explores the end-to-end process from developing a road map to requirements gathering, from physical design to logical design, from rollout and adoption to benchmarking and optimization. Most importantly, it comes with several real-world examples to help guide you on what you need for a successful program.

A few highlights

  1. Develop an outcome focused roadmap. The biggest reason that some organizations stumble out of the gate with Workspace ONE designs (or any technical designs, for that matter) is that they don’t take the time to develop a proper roadmap using a repeatable, introspective process. VMware’s Outcome-Focused Approach focuses on defining the following through a collaborative workshop with key stakeholders: business problem, IT problem, IT capabilities, business outcome. Once defined you’ve got the understanding needed to build your outcome-focused roadmap.
  2. Map user communities and use cases. The first big decision is how to logically segment your users, which can be done by geo or function. Next, you’ll need to decide what these user communities need to perform their jobs most efficiently. A use case is a combination of applications, profiles, configurations, and resources, utilized to promote an efficient use of a devices for a specific set of purposes. Use case = a user community + collection of apps/profiles/configurations/resources.
  3. Define and measure success with KPIs. An important early step is to establish key performance indicators (KPIs) during the design phase of the project. Which user communities are involved? What are you hoping to drive for each of those communities as a part of this project? Set S.M.A.R.T. (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, Time-Bound) goals for each of these KPIs and establish touchpoints or milestones throughout your project plan.
  4. Workspace ONE core and integration components and how to size them. Based on the use cases defined, which components will be required? Where should they be placed in the network? How many of each component do you need? The Workspace ONE Design Handbook helps you answer these questions and more!
  5. Real-world examples. Four business and IT situations are included to get you thinking about the proper high-level steps to designing a Workspace ONE implementation.

This handbook is not a substitute for a proper design from VMware Professional Services. The Workspace ONE Design Handbook covers the basic methodology and thought process for going through a design. VMware-led designs go much deeper and will help you tailor a solution that works best for your organization.
