U.S. Tax Day typically falls on April 15th, but this year got pushed back to July. Luckily, the latest open source project by the Velero team will make connecting with vSphere a little less taxing. Velero has a new open source plug-in for vSphere. This plug-in works with Velero Backup and enables snapshotting and backup of Kubernetes Persistent Volumes (PVs) on vSphere to S3 compatible storage.
The plug-in works with Velero 1.3.2 and Kubernetes 1.14 and higher using vSphere CSI plug-in 1.0.2 and higher. On vSphere 6.7U3 and higher (vSphere with Kubernetes), workloads are not yet supported, but it’s on the roadmap for a future release.
The plug-in uses vSphere snapshots and VADP to provide crash consistent snapshots stored in S3 compatible storage for Velero backups. All vSphere storage types supported by the CSI driver can be backed up.
All Velero restore modes are also supported. Restoration is possible into new and pre-existing Kubernetes clusters and namespaces and new and pre-existing vSphere installations.
