New Series: Features For Thought #1: vCAC 6.0 – Deploy New Applications that Connect with Existing Resources

Not all applications are provisioned with 100% new components and resources.  IT may have some pre-configured, hardened services like databases or firewalls that all applications must use. vCloud Automation Center 6.0 provides enhanced modeling capabilities that allow applications to be modeled and provisioned  using existing services.

When a multi-node application is deployed to the cloud, a virtual machine containing middleware services is provisioned for each node in the application blueprint. This is fine for development and test environments.  Typically however, IT will not permit important services to be provisioned newly in production. For instance, IT will have firewalls that have been heavily tested and hardened over time. Therefore, any application deployed in production must use these existing firewalls.

When modeling a new application, there needs to be a way to model existing services in the blueprint. vCloud Automation Center 6.0 enables this through a feature called External Service that is represented in a blueprint. In addition, it allows different instances of an external service in each environment. External Service Profiles map the abstract external service in an application blueprint to the actual service instance in an environment.

This additional benefit provides a way to model an application that will use existing services along with enough flexibility to separate out the differences in each environment. Reusing existing resources enables shorter setup time for an application, cost savings and efficient use of resources.
