What a week it has been for the DaaS market and for VMware here at VMware Partner Exchange (PEX). We continue to demonstrate why we are the clear market leader in DaaS with several great announcements this week. Not only did Desktone by VMware pioneer the DaaS market back in 2006 but now as part of VMware, we continue to drive innovation.
I have had many conversations this week with partners (4000+ VMware partners here!) and it is clear that DaaS is hot and we are in a fantastic position to help our partners accelerate their business. We made three huge announcements this week.
First, we announced a partnership with Google to modernize the corporate desktop and bring DaaS to Chromebooks. Second, we introduced the VMWare Horizon DaaS Platform, the industry’s first end-to-end software platform for DaaS built for cloud providers. Lastly, we announced that we have joined forces with Cisco, NetApp and Equinix to deliver the most simple and cost-effective way for service providers to get into the DaaS business with the new “OneStep” program.
VMware & Google Partner to Modernize the Corporate Desktop
Today, VMware announced a new partnership with Google to modernize the corporate desktop by delivering Windows desktops and apps through the cloud (public, private or hybrid) to Chromebooks.
Google Chromebooks are modern cloud devices that are secure and cost effective. Enterprises looking to adopt these devices can now be assured that they can move to the mobile-cloud era while still having access to their legacy Windows desktops, applications and data via a cloud service.
The joint solution enables employees to access their Windows applications, data and desktops using VMware’s Blast HTML5 technology from a Web-based application catalog on their Chromebook. With the end of Windows XP on the horizon, now customers have a simple way to refresh hardware.
The Joint cloud offering makes desktop virtualization easy, secure and cost effective:
- Easy – Enterprises can choose a true cloud device coupled with cloud delivered Windows desktops and apps running in a private, public or hybrid cloud environment
- Secure – Chromebooks offer superior security coupled with isolated corporate desktops protecting your data
- Lowest Cost – Assists with the move to the mobile-cloud era of end-user services without the upfront capital expense (CAPEX)
This new solution enables partners to capitalize on the market opportunity being created by cloud computing leaders Google and VMware and expand their desktop virtualization market opportunity by exploiting the market demand for Chromebooks as an alternative to Windows devices. Partners can deliver a complete solution for customers: desktop virtualization and affordable end points (with margin on both offerings).

Desktone by VMware is now VMware Horizon DaaS Platform!
The Desktone acquisition closed just four short months ago and we have quickly integrated the three key technologies that are key to building a scalable DaaS cloud:
- Desktone by VMware – Desktone by VMWare is built on a multi-tenant grid architecture that provides central management of multiple tenants and clouds that keeps secure information about each tenant completely separate to stay in compliance with MS licensing
- VMware Horizon View Experience – We have integrated our Horizon View user experience technology with the Desktone broker, giving our customers the best of both worlds – a cloud-based broker platform and a cloud-optimized delivery.
- VMware Virtualization and Cloud platform – We have fully integrated with the key components of VMware vCloud, including vSphere and vCenter.
This entire DaaS stack is now available as one SKU in the VMware Service Provider Program (VSPP). Now our service providers have one cloud platform purposely built for delivering the most secure, simple and cost effective DaaS in the market.
VMware, Cisco, NetApp and Equinix Partner to Offer “OneStep” Adoption of DaaS
Finally, we announced our new ‘OneStep’ program. The OneStep program is a collaboration between VMware, Cisco, NetApp and Equinix that enables a foundation for service providers to deliver the most cost-effective DaaS offering in the market.
Through a partnership with best-of-breed technology from leading cloud vendors, we are delivering the industry’s only turnkey solution for service providers to offer DaaS. By creating a combined solution complete with a tailored DaaS financial model from NetApp Capital Solutions, we can enable service providers to minimize their cash outlay in order to focus on building their business and develop customer demand.
More To Come On DaaS
As you can see, it has been a very exciting first 4 months for the VMware DaaS team with partner programs and product developments keeping us very busy. When Desktone was acquired at the end of 2013, we knew that combining the Desktone DaaS market leadership with VMware’s leadership in cloud and virtualization was going to change the market. The announcements this week are proof that this is true. Stay tuned for even more DaaS announcements in the coming months!
