IDC MarketScape vendor analysis model is designed to provide an overview of the competitive fitness of ICT suppliers in a given market. The research methodology utilizes a rigorous scoring methodology based on both qualitative and quantitative criteria that results in a single graphical illustration of each vendor’s position within a given market. The Capabilities score measures vendor product, go-to-market and business execution in the short-term. The Strategy score measures alignment of vendor strategies with customer requirements in a 3-5-year timeframe. Vendor market share is represented by the size of the circles. Vendor year-over-year growth rate relative to the given market is indicated by a plus, neutral or minus next to the vendor name.

According to the 2019-2020 IDC MarketScape: “VMware’s breadth and depth of virtual client computing technologies is in keeping with the company’s role as a leader and general services provider in the market. Its focus on device management and virtualization is particularly well suited for large, complex environments with a modern hybrid infrastructure stack consisting of dedicated devices, private cloud services, and an array of public clouds.”

Since the previous IDC MarketScape for VCC was published in 2016, we’ve been working hard to continue execution against our hybrid strategy and delivering innovative capabilities across VMware Horizon and Horizon Cloud offerings. Our north star is ensuring our customers receive market-leading value from our hybrid and multi-cloud desktop and app delivery approach. And being positioned as a Leader in the latest 2019-2020 IDC MarketScape for VCC is a testament to our approach. Let’s take a look at some of the highlights we’ve had and continue to work on in our mission to simplify desktop and app management, reduce complexity, lower costs, and enhance security through virtual client computing, and as part of an even larger digital workspace.

Enabling New Use Cases with Hybridity and Multi-cloud

While customers have been successfully deploying on-premises VDI and published apps for years, the advent of the cloud has enabled us to deliver a hybrid and multi-cloud approach through Horizon 7 and Horizon Cloud. This has unlocked new use cases for customers, such as cloud-based disaster recovery without infrastructure investment, datacenter expansion for on-premises deployments and ultimately accelerating time to value for on-premises customers. VMware enables customers to use hybridity and the cloud of their choice through our Horizon Universal License and through private and public cloud deployments like Horizon 7, Horizon 7 on VMC on AWS and Horizon Cloud on Microsoft Azure. Our cross-cloud control plane is starting to help customers simplify the management of images, applications, lifecycle services and more across private and public clouds. And just recently, we announced a Tech Preview of Horizon Cloud on Microsoft Azure with support for the benefits of Windows Virtual Desktop, such as Windows 10 Enterprise multi-session, which customers are already participating in.

Just-in-Time Management Platform (JMP)

The Just-in-Time Management Platform in Horizon 7 continues to make desktop and app management easier by combining instant clone technology with App Volumes (including the recent App Volumes 4 release) and Dynamic Environment Manager. With the ability to use one image to spin up 1,000 desktops in 20 minutes, and then have applications and user environment settings instantly delivered to users or desktops, the cost for administration and time spent deploying virtual desktops gets significantly reduced. Security also gets a boost since desktops that potentially house malware can be immediately destroyed with instant clone technology. Integrating with the VMware SDDC Stack

Combining our VMware Software-Defined Datacenter (SDDC) technologies with Horizon brings tremendous value to customers, as highlighted in the IDC MarketScape for VCC report [insert link]. Customers can realize the benefits of Horizon and Horizon Cloud deployed on SDDC infrastructure, from core server virtualization with vSphere, to storage tie-ins with vSAN, to integrations at the network layer with NSX. Horizon 7 can also be easily deployed on VMware Cloud Foundation, giving customers a turnkey automated SDDC solution for their desktop and application virtualization needs.

Delivering a Secure Digital Workspace

Horizon 7 and Horizon Cloud are also core platform services in our Workspace ONE platform. Customers can use Horizon 7 and Horizon Cloud for remote delivery and management of windows virtual desktops and apps. Several other Workspace ONE platform services, like Workspace ONE UEM and Zero Trust Conditional Access, can also be leveraged with the Horizon service in order to modernize management and security of VDI and apps. That’s all coupled with the great experience employees get when accessing all their apps, including Horizon-based desktops and apps, from the device of their choice with Workspace ONE Intelligent Hub.

We are humbled and honored to be recognized as a leader in the 2019-2020 IDC MarketScape for Worldwide Virtual Client Computing report. To learn more about our virtual desktops and apps offerings, visit https://www.vmware.com/products/desktop-virtualization.html
