VMware Horizon Announcements VMware App Volumes VMware Horizon Cloud

New VMware Horizon and App Volumes enhancements to Amazon WorkSpaces Core and Amazon AppStream

Following through on previous announcements between VMware by Broadcom and Amazon end-user computing (EUC) teams, we have been working closely behind the scenes to make our joint solutions easier to manage, more automated, and more powerful. Now, we are thrilled to unveil the current offerings and provide a sneak peek into the exciting offerings slated for release.

Available today: App Volumes support for Amazon AppStream 2.0

Based on our announcement at VMware Explore in August 2023, VMware App Volumes now supports Amazon AppStream 2.0. This is in addition to its support for Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud, VMware Cloud on AWS, and Amazon WorkSpaces Core support. App Volumes, used by customers to deliver and manage apps in virtual desktop and public cloud environments, will provide a powerful solution for customers who want a consistent and reliable way to manage hundreds to thousands of apps using Amazon AppStream 2.0.

If you are interested in trying this in your own environment you can follow the simple steps from our guide to deploy App Volumes on AppStream 2.0. For new customers who want to try this functionality through a free trial, App Volumes Manager is now available in the Amazon Marketplace.

Coming soon: VMware App Volumes support for Horizon on Amazon WorkSpaces Core

Horizon on VMware vSphere customers can deliver applications to non-persistent desktops with App Volumes today. However, because Amazon WorkSpaces Core desktops are persistent, App Volumes cannot support those.

We are excited to announce that App Volumes will now be supporting persistent desktops, including Horizon on Amazon WorkSpaces Core, within the first half of 2024. App Volumes redefines how apps are delivered and managed across Horizon VDI and Apps, Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops, Azure Virtual Desktop, and Amazon Web Services. We will be adding the same capability to Amazon WorkSpaces Core.

App Volumes completely up-ends the way traditional apps are managed in desktops. Instead of managing apps for each individual desktop, App Volumes enables a single app image to be used for many desktops. Not only does this reduce the amount of storage required for apps, but it also simplifies the Day 2 patch operations for those apps. Instead of having to patch hundreds and thousands of copies of the same app, admins only patch one app image. This new way of delivering and managing apps will be available to Horizon on Amazon WorkSpaces Core.

We are running a beta for our customers to try this feature. If you are interested in an opportunity to be invited, register using the beta form here.

Coming soon: Integrated WorkSpaces Core provisioning and lifecycle management from VMware Horizon console

Horizon uses the concept of a desktop pool to manage desktop compute capacity and connect end users to their desktops. “Automated pools” refer to desktop pools created and managed by Horizon while the lifecycles of “manual pools” are managed outside of Horizon. In February 2023, we announced manual desktop pools support for Horizon customers on Amazon WorkSpaces Core.

We’re delighted to share that within the first half of 2024, Horizon will also support automated pools of Amazon WorkSpaces Core. This support for simplified virtual desktop provisioning and power management will result by integrating directly with Amazon APIs. Once IT admins add the Amazon WorkSpaces Core subscription to the Horizon console, they can quickly provision and manage the lifecycle of the virtual desktops, including power management, directly from the Horizon Console.

These solutions from VMware Horizon and App Volumes build on our vision to support hybrid and multi-cloud environments for virtual desktops and apps. If you are at AWS re:Invent in Las Vegas, visit VMware by Broadcom at booth #700 to see some of these solutions in action.
