Today, we’re excited to share that VMware was positioned as a Leader in three recent IDC vendor assessments for the Unified Endpoint Management (UEM) market:
- IDC MarketScape: Worldwide Unified Endpoint Management Software 2021 Vendor Assessment
- IDC MarketScape: Worldwide Unified Endpoint Management Software for Ruggedized/Internet of Things Deployment 2021 Vendor Assessment
- IDC MarketScape: Worldwide Unified Endpoint Management Software for Apple Devices 2021 Vendor Assessment
This was the fourth year in a row VMware was named a Leader in both the UEM and UEM for Ruggedized/Internet of Things (IoT) Deployment MarketScape reports, and we were thrilled to be named a Leader in IDC’s first MarketScape assessment for UEM for Apple Devices.
IDC MarketScape vendor assessments are designed to provide an overview of the competitive fitness of information and communications technology (ICT) suppliers in a given market. The research methodology utilizes a rigorous scoring methodology based on both qualitative and quantitative criteria. In this year’s vendor assessments for the UEM market, IDC specifically advised technology buyers to look for solutions with strong baseline mobile support and UEM capabilities, a roadmap for customer success, strong portfolio of adjacent and complementary products and services, broad legacy and modern PC management support functions, workspace intelligence and analytics, support for BYO, conditional access controls and policy enforcement, and scalable cloud-based delivery options.
In light of the recent health emergency, VMware demonstrated a rapid pace of innovation to help customers maintain business continuity and maximize their distributed workforce strategy. We believe IDC recognized VMware as a leader in all three MarketScape assessments because of our Workspace ONE UEM solution, which enables customers to drive workplace modernization, implement zero trust access and provide the best employee experience. As an intelligence-driven digital workspace platform, Workspace ONE integrates access control, application management and multi-OS endpoint management into a single platform, making it easy for organizations across the globe to quickly adapt to challenges or disruptions.
IDC MarketScape for UEM Software
According to IDC, the management of Windows 10, macOS, iOS, Android and Chrome OS endpoints is rapidly converging around the concept of unified endpoint management, with over 70% of US enterprises piloting or deploying a UEM solution. The recent health emergency continues to accelerate this adoption and the need for UEM to accommodate remote-first cultures and changing market demands of employees working outside the traditional “perimeter”.
VMware continues to deliver a best-in-class UEM solution that not only meets the needs of our customers but provides an outstanding customer experience. Over the past year, we’ve delivered scalable modern management for Windows 10, macOS, iOS, Android, Chrome OS and Linux, as well as mission-critical devices (like rugged mobile computers, wearables, and interactive kiosks); enhanced support for customers migrating from traditional network-based Client Management Tools (CMT) to a cloud-native modern management that supports an anywhere workforce; and delightful employee experiences across any use case, with expanded BYO options, seamless shared device management, and comprehensive remote employee support. Workspace ONE Intelligence and Carbon Black provide the most advanced endpoint security, combining integrated insights and app analytics to identify and stop known and unknown internal and external threats. We also recently introduced Freestyle Orchestrator in Workspace ONE UEM—a radically different way to interact with the end-user computing ecosystem—which enables organizations to create intricate no- to low-code workflows and unlock a variety of modernization “solutions” across onboarding, compliance, application lifecycle and more.

IDC MarketScape for UEM for Ruggedized/IoT Deployments
Over the years, UEM tools have evolved to cover a wider range of use cases beyond traditional mobile and PC management. According to IDC, support for non-traditional use cases and modern management of ruggedized and IoT endpoints is a key requirement in any UEM product evaluation. In IDC’s 2020 Enterprise Mobility and Workspace Software Survey, over 60% of U.S. enterprises plan to deploy “workspace” IoT and other smart technologies. As the recent health emergency continues to take precedent, such endpoints will become critical in maintaining business continuity and keeping office employees and essential frontline workers safe.
We believe IDC recognized VMware as a Leader in their MarketScape for UEM for Ruggedized/IoT Deployments because of our Workspace ONE solution, which is built to meet the unique management requirements of mission-critical devices. Whether your deployment consists of desktop workstations, rugged mobile computers or handheld scanners, point-of-sale or point-of-care devices, interactive kiosks, digital signage, or augmented or virtual reality head-mounted wearables, Workspace ONE makes it easy for enterprises across all industries to stage, manage and support each endpoint throughout its lifecycle. Our remote worker support solution, Workspace ONE Assist, enables organizations to quickly assist workers with device tasks or troubleshoot and fix device issues in real-time. Workspace ONE Launcher makes it easy for IT to lock shared or multi-user devices in single or multi-app mode, support check-in/check-out, and customize the UI to match your company’s brand, directly from the Workspace ONE UEM console.

IDC MarketScape for UEM for Apple Devices
Adoption of Apple devices in the enterprise is growing rapidly, with Apple seeing a 34% spike in Mac shipments in 2020, according to IDC’s Worldwide Personal Computing Device Tracker.
As a trusted Apple Mobility Partner, VMware continues to help enterprises transform their business and elevate the employee experience with iOS, iPadOS, macOS and tvOS devices. For macOS devices, Workspace ONE provides a modern management approach, with out-of-the-box, over-the-air onboarding, imageless deployment, same-day management support for Apple’s latest releases and a consistent and frictionless end-user experience. Over the past year, we’ve expanded our macOS capabilities by introducing advanced Scripting, Sensors that help IT collect any system (device, OS, software, etc.) attribute and automate compliance, Intelligence-driven vulnerability management, enhanced OS and app update lifecycle and Freestyle Orchestrator to simplify complex IT workflows. For iOS devices, Workspace ONE supports Apple Business Manager and the ability to configure shared or multi-user devices used by essential frontline workers.
