VMworld 2015

It’s that time of year again and as of today (July 21st) the VMworld Schedule Builder has gone live. So what are you signing up for? Before you answer that question, take a look at what PowerCLI activities are going on while you are there. Check back again before VMworld as we may end up adding other events to this page.

Note: There have been a few updates to the schedule, denoted in red and listed below:

Sessions:

Monday, Aug 31, 3:30 PM – 4:30 PM – Ben Meadowcroft & Sudarsan Piduri
STO6074 – Automating Storage Management with SPBM: In this session, we will showcase how Storage Policy Based Management (SPBM) reduces fragility and complexity in your environment. Automation is becoming the norm in enterprise datacenters. However, increasing complexity of our environment is leading to increasing fragility of these automation platforms. Policy based management addresses this crucial issue by isolating your automation from underlying physical platform changes. In this session we will demonstrate how you can use PowerCLI, vCO and OpenStack to consume SPBM resources in vSphere.

Tuesday, Sept 1, 3:30 PM – 4:30 PM – Alan Renouf & Luc Dekens
INF5211 – Automating Everything VMware with PowerCLI – Deep Dive: PowerCLI is the number 1 automation product from VMware, in previous years you have seen how to get the most out of your infrastructure using PowerCLI. This year we will take it further than ever including new product automation never seen before, automating your public cloud instances and showing migration and reporting for your cloud workloads. This session will demonstrate how to bring DevOps working practices into your vSphere automation with PowerCLI and Desired State Configuration (DSC).
Wednesday, Sep 2, 8:30 AM – 9:30 AMMassimo Re Ferre & Paco Gomez
HBC4521 – An Introduction to API, CLI and Automation for vCloud Air:
In this session we will explore how you can consume vCloud Air through its raw programmatic interfaces. We will kick off with an introduction of the overarching architecture of the entire service as well as the specific sub-services that comprise vCloud Air. We will also go through the CLI options available today with a focus on VCA-CLI (a multi-platform python based CLI for vCloud Air). And in conclusion we will introduce and describe what automation tools are available that integrate vCloud Air as a programmable end-point.

Wednesday, Sept 2, 12:30-1:30 PM – Brian Graf
INF4793 – Day to Day Automation of VMware Products to Increase Productivity and Efficiency: Many of us have become very comfortable in performing tasks manually in the desktop client or the vSphere Web Client, but doing things manually will always take more time and be more prone to errors, as opposed to automating them. Come learn how easy our automation solution is and how you can start automating actions, reports, and processes in your virtual environment today! We will discuss how to perform bulk actions against objects in the environment, create fast and valuable reports, and how to move away from all the manual and redundant tasks. If you do something more than once, you should automate it. If you are a PowerCLI beginner or haven’t even tried PowerCLI, this session is for you. Stop wasting your time and learn how to reclaim your day, the PowerCLI way.

Wednesday, Sep 2, 2:30 PM – 3:30 PM – Alan Renouf & Li Zheng
INF5803 – Deploy Hundreds of VMs Instantly via Forking: Are you tired of waiting for a slow remote desktop login before you can start your exciting presentation? Do you wait for hours to provision your Big Data clusters? As a vSphere admin are you frustrated by the time it takes to deploy your templates, power them on and customize them? vSphere now has new technology called ‘Instant Clone’ that enables you to solve all these problems, and more. Instant clone instantiates virtual machines that are ready-to-use in under a second! The applications of this technology are wide-ranging. Several early adopters of this feature improved deployment times by several orders of magnitude and will save many man-years of OpEx costs. The virtual machines are brought up fully booted up with the applications pre-launched, and it is done with extremely low overhead. The resulting VMs use copy-on-write not just for parent disks, but also for parent memory — they are effectively linked clones in both disk and memory state. Interested in learning more? Join us in this session to get an insider’s view of instant clone architecture, how it works, use cases and best practices. We’ll also present performance studies, and conclude with a live demo in PowerCLI.

Wednesday, Sep 2, 4:00 PM – 5:00 PM – Brian Graf & Salil Suri

INF5800 – ‘Zero Touch’ ESXi Deployment, Configuration & Upgrades with AutoDeploy and Host Profiles: Auto Deploy is a powerful feature that allows you to provision (& “Upgrade”) ESXi hosts in an automated fashion and @scale. Host Profiles is a great feature which allows you to configure your ESX environment (central or remote) and keep it consistent. Together, these features can deliver unparalleled agility & efficiency. We look at what’s new in vSphere 6, and the roadmap for both these features; We will also discuss many best practices around sizing auto deploy for your environment including prescriptive steps for hitting desired performance and scale targets. We will discuss the recommended approach for converting your existing stateful ESXi hosts into stateless (and the reasons why you should do this) & PowerCLI tips for creating solid auto deploy rules and effective host profiles. We will also do a demo of AutoDeploy & Host Profile working together in this highly automated fashion. This session will be of interest to administrators of all levels of expertise.

Group Discussions:

Monday, Aug 31, 12:00 PM – 1:00 PM – Alan Renouf & Brian Graf
INF6392-GD – API and CLI with Brian Graf and Alan Renouf: Group Discussions are a good way to join together with peers, guided by a VMware expert, and discuss a VMware key topic as selected by the group. Come to this session prepared to dive-in, engage, and share best practices.
