VMware further extends the market for HCI to a broader set of mission-critical applications by announcing vSAN support of InterSystems Caché and IRIS® Data Platform, key database platforms used extensively in healthcare and financial services by customers like Quest, Labcorp, Credit Suisse and others. VMware’s leading, software-first approach to HCI provides the availability, agility and performance necessary to run the most demanding applications on industry-standard servers.
“We are thrilled to include InterSystems Caché and IRIS Data Platform® in the vSAN ecosystem, helping many healthcare companies, financial services companies and governments digitally transform. vSAN allows them to seamlessly evolve their infrastructure and free up capital to focus on other areas of business innovation, leading to better client, patient, and constituent outcomes,” said Lee Caswell, Vice President, Storage and Availability Products at VMware.
Numerous customers rely on vSAN to power business critical applications (BCAs) today; in fact, it is the top use case, with almost two-thirds of customers running BCAs on vSAN1. One vSAN customer, Union Hospital of Terre Haute, Indiana, migrated their GE Healthcare Centricity EMR software from legacy SAN and saw their latency drop over 99.5%, reporting time drop over 80% and application launch time drop over 83%2. The top applications include Microsoft SQL Server, MySQL databases, Microsoft Exchange Server and Oracle databases1.
vSAN + InterSystems Caché and InterSystems IRIS Data Platform
InterSystems Caché provides customers with the ability to store, use, and analyze transactional and historical data concurrently in whatever forms required. High-speed SQL runs consistently and seamlessly across all data models. As throughput and data volume requirements increase, Caché maintains consistently high performance. Caché was recognized in the 2017 Magic Quadrant for Operational Database Management Systems by the research firm Gartner.
InterSystems IRIS Data Platform® , the latest generation of InterSystems data management platform combines a transactional-analytic processing engine optimized for all types of data –big, small, structured, unstructured, centralized, decentralized, historical, and real-time with native interoperability for connecting and creating business processes among disparate applications and data sources and an open analytics platform for applying real-time and batch analytics including business intelligence, predictive models, machine learning, and natural language processing.
“Hyperconverged Infrastructure represents the logical future for our customers,” said Todd Winey, director of partner programs for InterSystems. InterSystems has worked closely with VMware to ensure support for vSAN meets the performance criteria our customers expect for mission-critical applications. We count VMware as a key partner in helping our customers use infrastructure cost-effectively.”
Top 3 Reasons Why vSAN
vSAN powered HCI accelerates your business’ adoption of InterSystems applications through linear scaling, leading flexibility and reducing TCO.
- Linear Scaling
InterSystems Caché and IRIS Data Platform utilize scale-out architectures to achieve their high performance, efficiency, and reliability, which matches vSAN’s architecture. To grow your HCI cluster, you can scale out (add nodes) or scale up (add drives to existing nodes). As you add nodes to the vSAN cluster, the overall memory is increased, allowing InterSystems platforms to achieve the performance benefits of in-memory databases without requiring all data to fit in memory. Simply add or remove nodes to support workload fluctuations.
- Leading flexibility
Unlike other HCI vendors, which require you to adopt an appliance for HCI deployments, vSAN has the largest HCI ecosystem and works with your existing server vendor, simplifying operations in your data center. vSAN has over 500 jointly certified servers with over 15 server OEMs, as well as a jointly engineered turnkey appliance, Dell EMC VxRail.
- Reducing TCO
vSAN empowers you to reduce the CapEx and OpEx required for a new HCI cluster, or replacing existing infrastructure powering InterSystems applications. You can reduce storage CapEx with vSphere native storage that leverages server-side economics and affordable flash and avoid large u- front expenditures by growing-as-you-go with on-demand, granular scaling of compute and storage. You can also decrease operational expenses with the rapid deployment of compute and storage infrastructure. Additionally, accelerate responsiveness to traditionally time-consuming tasks, from installation to troubleshooting to performance tuning, with 1-click hardware lifecycle management, intelligent analytics, advanced monitoring and VM-level automation.
