VMworld 2018 US is a wrap. What a week it has been. From the announcements (see below) to great sessions, networking, and for the Virtually Speaking Podcast crew, lots of great conversations. There is no possible way to recap everything that happened this past week in one episode but we tried our best to cram in a few of the highlights. One thing is certain, throughout the next few weeks we will have plenty of great content to share.
Speaking of big news, vSAN 6.7 Update 1 was announced last week. John and I had the opportunity to present the What’s New in vSAN session, and we’ll be bringing in some vSAN experts to unpack this release on the next episode.
Here is the rundown for this week’s episode:
7:28 VMworld Hackathon Winners: In this segment, we bring on the winners of the VMworld 2018 Hackathon – vMafia Aussie team: Anthony Spiteri, Tim Carman, Matt Alford, and Mark Ukotic. These blokes created a PowerShell / PowerCLI console built into the new HTML5 vSphere Client. Crikey that was impressive. Be sure to find the details on Mark’s blog blog.ukotic.net Congratulations to Tim and Matt for presenting the #2 session at VMworld Documenting your virtual infrastructure with PowerShell and PowerCLI.
17:40 Project Dimension with Frank Denneman: On Monday’s General Session VMware announced they are extending the capabilities of VMware Cloud on AWS to the edge. Frank shares his thoughts on VMworld, the ARM announcement and Project Dimension.
30:34 The Evolution of Veeam with Co-CEO Peter McKay: In 2006 when virtualization was still fairly new to many organizations, Veeam Software, a small backup and recovery company emerged to protect VMware Virtual Machines. Over the years Veeam has evolved into an always-on availability company. This week we had the opportunity to chat with Co-CEO Peter McKay to see what’s on the horizon for Veeam.
38:14 Michael Dell on VMworld and VMware: As VMware turns 20 this year and is now a subsidiary of Dell Technologies, it was great to hear from Dell Founder and CEO Michael Dell on the importance of VMworld as a conference as well as the important role VMware plays in the overall success of Dell Technologies.
49:57 VMware CEO Pat Gelsinger: VMworld 2018 was an epic event, packed with product releases, acquisitions, and countless major announcements. There is no better way to close out this recap episode than a conversation with VMware CEO Pat Gelsinger.
Congratulations to the winner of the vSpeaking Beats by Dre Aaron Kay

In this episode, I mentioned I would share the photo of Aaron Buley and Tyler Gates (2/3 of the SEV Ops Crew… we missed you Russ Cantwell) in their superhero attire. If I remember correctly the bling Aaron was sporting was a reflection of the run rate for VxRAIL.
VMworld, in general, is always the major tech event of the year and 2018 was arguably the best ever. From announcements to content, sessions, networking, and socializing it was a pretty special week. The Virtually Speaking Podcast crew will be in Barcelona for VMworld in November and we look forward to seeing you there. We will be giving away another pair of vSpeaking Beats by Dre headphones. Swing by the HCI Zone in the Solutions Exchange for details on how to win. A special thanks to Glenn Sizemore for stepping in on several interviews this week. It takes a village. We’re back next week to unpack vSAN 6.7 Update 1 but until then…..Bye for now.
