VMware Keeps Employees Productive from Home in Historic Pandemic with VMware SD-WAN
Like most leading enterprises, VMware relies on its WAN infrastructure to keep its 30,000+ employees connected, collaborative, and productive all around the world. But we found that administering that infrastructure at 60+ global sites was becoming expensive and painful. Luckily we had the solution right in front of us: VMware SD-WAN. When the pandemic hit and millions of workers had to pivot to home offices, VMware not only helped its customers set up SD-WAN networks, we accelerated our own deployment.

Tips and tricks: Offline VMware SD-WAN Edges
This month’s tip comes from the SD-WAN Support team. Tickets will come in referring to an edge showing as offline in the VMware SD-WAN Orchestrator. The assumption is made that when the Edge is offline from the Orchestrator’s perspective, there is no data passing through it. This may not be the case. There is a management plane separate from the data plane. So it is entirely possible that the data plane is still working as expected and passing traffic.
How can you tell? Try sending some data through it! The LED on the edge is also helpful in determining what is going on. If the LED is solid yellow, it means there is in fact Internet connectivity, but the edge is unable to communicate with the Orchestrator. Solid red? There is no Internet connectivity and no traffic is passing.
To read more about the SD-WAN Edge LED lights, check out this KB article here. If you are seeing a solid yellow light, as with anything in IT, try rebooting the Edge first. If you are still seeing issues, feel free to reach out to the support team through the Customer Connect portal.
