With an increased uptick of applications moving to the cloud, it becomes imperative to rethink how enterprises forward traffic from branches. The traditional approach of sending traffic from branches via an on premises data center is no longer feasible since data center locations were built keeping branch locations into consideration and not public cloud destinations. Hence, the traffic destined for cloud needs to be broken out locally from the branches. The Zscaler + VMware SD-WAN solution adds a new angle with regards to security because earlier the data center was our center of gravity where all the security appliances resided. Now, with branches performing a direct Internet breakout, they are susceptible to security attacks via the public internet. An ideal solution would be to install a firewall at all the branches, but this immediately becomes cost prohibitive as an enterprise starts growing. The answer for this is usage of a cloud security solution wherein security functions are provided as a service in the cloud. Our Engagement
As a gold sponsor of Zenith Live 2019, VeloCloud, now part of VMware had a booth where we were able to talk to many enterprises across verticals about their WAN and security challenges and provide them with more information about the many benefits of VMware SD-WAN. We also ran a VMware SD-WAN plus Zscaler integration lab, where 50 attendees (Zscaler partners and customers) came to learn about our API integration through a demo. This API integration provides easier deployment and configuration, enabling an automated way of connecting VMware SD-WAN Edges to the closest Zscaler ZEN nodes. Finally, the VeloCloud team participated in a breakout session in which our very own, Ramnath Shenai, senior technical product manager, and Punit Minocha, senior VP, business and corporate development at Zscaler, co-presented with Ciena (our joint customer).
