Cloud DVD Store Oracle Database Performance SQL Server Virtualization vSphere

Leveraging the Full Power of Oracle Cloud VMware Solution and VMware vSphere

A technical white paper has been published that showcases the power of an enterprise cloud ecosystem featuring VMware, Oracle, AMD, and Deloitte.

Figure 1. The enterprise cloud ecosystem with four partners: VMware, Oracle, AMD, and Deloitte

In this paper, we show how Oracle Cloud VMware Solution (OCVS) differs from other public cloud environments by:

  • Migrating Oracle and SQL Server VMs from on-premises to OCVS with no refactoring and achieving the same performance.
  • Showing OCVS running on a system with AMD EPYC processors achieves the same database performance boosts as on-premises performance.
  • Showing NSX Data Center can accelerate Oracle workloads, citing VMware and Deloitte Consulting studies.
  • Showing the cost and technical benefits of customer-managed host remediations.

About OCVS

OCVS includes the VMware products vSphere, vSAN, NSX Data Center, and vCenter Server. This unified cloud infrastructure and operations platform enables enterprise IT personnel to migrate and modernize applications quickly while seamlessly moving workloads between on-premises and Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) at scale. Additionally, IT teams can easily leverage services such as Oracle Autonomous Database, Oracle Exadata Cloud, and Oracle Database Cloud with consistent portal access and modernized APIs.

OCVS performance

VMware vSphere is a proven enterprise virtualization platform that has successfully run Oracle VMs for over 12 years. As shown in figure 2, an Oracle Database VM running a challenging enterprise workload in OCVS performs almost as well as an on-premises instance. When we scale the Oracle Database VMs out to 8, the VMs on OCVS perform slightly better than the on-premises VMs.

Figure 2. The number of orders per minute that Oracle Database can perform is about the same when comparing the database running on-premises to using OCVS

Also, using a VMware benchmark to measure database performance (DVD Store), Deloitte, in an independent study, reported that Oracle Database VMs run up to 4x to 8x faster with VMware NSX, as seen in figure 3.

Figure 3. Testing showing performance gains from optimal placement of VMs with NSX using Apache Bench HTTP-based tool
