Cloud Updates Migration Success Stories

How Zipwhip Optimized Their Multicloud Environment

Zipwhip is a Seattle-based startup, viewed as the texting vendor of choice for companies of all sizes. With more than 20,000 customers, including brands like Farmers Insurance, Aflac, and The Medicine Shoppe, Zipwhip has been growing at a considerable rate; and with this growth, Zipwhip made the decision to migrate to the cloud.

Zipwhip needed a reliable environment that could scale to meet market demand while decreasing spend. Further, a cloud-based environment would allow Zipwhip to speed time-to-market availability of their SaaS platform, allowing them to avoid traditional procurement processes, at lower costs. In order to meet these needs, Zipwhip migrated to a multicloud environment, choosing Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Microsoft Azure as their cloud service providers.

Amid this migration to multicloud, the team at Zipwhip sought to optimize their cloud infrastructure, while automating cloud security and compliance across teams, minimizing visibility challenges or security risks.

Zipwhip needed a cloud management platform that would go further than others available in the market, actually analyzing data—instead of simply consolidating the data. They also needed to manage their AWS and Azure environments, in conjunction with their Kubernetes container orchestration system. Finally, Zipwhip needed a platform that would be useful for all teams—including executives—beyond just the DevOps team. To meet their various cloud management needs, Zipwhip chose CloudHealth by VMware and VMware Secure State.

CloudHealth’s cloud management platform enables customers to optimize their multicloud environments through increased visibility, automation, and control over cloud spend. Further, Zipwhip now utilizes VMware Secure State to identify public cloud misconfigurations, visualize at-risk infrastructure, correlate cross-cloud treat activity, and automate security and compliance reporting across teams. Using both cloud management products in tandem, Zipwhip is now able to effectively—and securely—scale their growing business. Best of all, product deployment was quick and required minimal ramp up time.

Since deploying CloudHealth, Zipwhip has migrated 90% of their infrastructure to the cloud in nine months. Now, Zipwhip can easily monitor cloud spend and compare infrastructure costs.

Following the successful deployment of both CloudHealth’s cloud management platform and VMware Secure State, Zipwhip has plans to expand usage going forward.
