Imagine if you could look inside your virtualized infrastructure and see its topology and dynamics at scale. This is what we strove to deliver using Virtual Reality to transport you within your private and public clouds and see how they operate at scale. We built this experience using the Oculus Rift and the API surface of the vRealize suite as a showcase of their power and flexibility. When you put on the headset the first thing you will see is a three-dimensional map of the world showing your datacenters in their actual geographical locations as well as their major sources of internet traffic which are also geo-tagged. This information comes from vRealize Network Insight’s APIs.
Looking deeper into a particular datacenter you will see every single VM that is running within that cloud simultaneously. The immersive nature of VR allows us to use 3D space to represent your virtual machines all around you as points of light. The overall effect is like looking up at the night sky, a metaphor we chose both because of its familiarity and the density of information that can be shown. We group the virtual machines into constellations that represent applications deployed by a vRealize Automation blueprint. The deployments in turn are grouped by cluster which are represented as hexagonal regions. The clusters themselves are grouped by their proximity to the edge of your cloud which is shown as a dark hexagon in the center. There is one deeper level of zoom that can show you details of the VMs in a deployment. VMs that appear closer to you are the ones that are costing you the most. This is calculated using data from vRealize Business for Cloud. Those that are larger have more resources and those that are brighter are newer. We group the VMs within a deployment by tier, the load balancers are at the top, web servers are in the middle and databases are at the bottom. Detailed information including CPU and Memory consumption provided by vRealize Operations can be seen by hovering over a VM and their color indicates excessive consumption or a powered off state so you can quickly identify stressed or unused VMs. Now you want to give it a try by yourself?
