Reclaiming Inactive resources can be a manual labor intensive process. See how vCloud Automation Center can automate and simplify that process.
Many companies estimate that at least 10% or more of their compute resources are being consumed by inactive and abandon applications and machines. We are not talking about temporary resources that can easily be reclaimed at the end of a lease period. We are talking about machines that you thought were going to be permanent, but for one reason or another have become inactive and no longer used. This problem is bad when it’s internal resources, but is compounded when you are paying for public cloud resources you may no longer be using. For example: using our sample configuration of 1000 virtual machines, If 10% were inactive and not being used, more effective reclamation and reuse of permanent machine resources could represent a savings of over $120,000 annually.
Reports Solve only Part of the Problem
The first step in reclaiming unused resources is to identify potentially inactive resources. However, report-only solutions solve less than half of this problem, leaving the remaining manual work to verify these resources are no longer needed and then reclaim them. These manual steps decrease the chances that reclamation will actually be performed. vCloud Automation Center provides reports which identify potentially inactive machines, but also automates the notification, verification and reclamation process improving operational efficiency and increasing the amount of resources that can be reclaimed and reused for other purposes. In addition, reclamation efficiency reports tied to charge back information can be used to quantify savings.
