Happy New Year! Load balancing enters 2020!
As we reflect on the previous decades, it’s interesting to see how applications, infrastructure, and traditional load balancing methods have evolved:
- The 1990s — Monolithic applications and bare metal infrastructure in data center racks were the lifeblood of enterprise IT. Hardware load balancer appliances were developed to ensure high availability.
- The 2000s — Virtualization revolutionized infrastructure through software (thanks, VMware!) and paved the way for SOA (service oriented architecture) applications. No real innovation in load balancing methods… everybody still had to use hardware appliances.
- The 2010s — All the clouds (private, public, hybrid, and multi) took center stage for enterprise IT, while containers and microservices architecture captivated developers. However, legacy load balancing vendors continued to give you two flavors: hardware load balancer appliances (vanilla) or virtual load balancer appliances (diet vanilla).
The 2010s also gave you Avi Networks, the company that reinvented load balancing by abandoning appliances entirely and replacing them with a software-defined, controller-based load balancing fabric, which supports any kind of application across all data centers and clouds. The world’s largest enterprises loved Avi. So did VMware. VMware buys Avi Networks. Boom.
So here we are, at the start of a fresh new decade. It’s exciting to think about what new innovations the years ahead will bring!
