Private clouds have become indispensable for businesses across industries due to their enhanced security, control, and customization capabilities. This has resulted in an increase in the demand for cloud computing professionals, with roles such as cloud architects, cloud engineers, and cloud developers becoming increasingly desirable. Companies are also looking for experienced professionals to help manage and maintain private cloud computing infrastructure.
Despite this rapid growth of this technology, there has been a significant skills gap resulting in businesses being unable to fully capitalize on the benefits of private cloud computing. IDC estimates that nine out of ten organizations will face a shortage of IT skills by 2026, resulting in delays, quality problems, and revenue losses of $5.5 trillion. Developing robust training programs that support ongoing, agile learning on a continuous basis is essential for an organization to future-proof its talent.
Private cloud skills gap: a critical challenge
According to TechReport, it is estimated private cloud spending will grow by nearly 30% by 2029 to $528.36 billion. In an era when private cloud computing is becoming more popular among companies and top tech talent is in short supply, companies are having a challenging time finding qualified employees. As a result of this unusual combination of events, companies have been hindered in their efforts to remain at the forefront of technology. To assist with this transition, according to the Cloud Skills Report by Software One, 97% of survey respondents are prioritizing upskilling their existing IT teams to adapt to new ways of working in the near future.
With 45% of organizations currently using a private cloud and 55% are using traditionally managed on-premises infrastructure according to a recent report from O’Reily . According to a recent State of Cloud Strategy Survey by HashiCorp, 82% of enterprises agreed that having the proper staffing and skill levels is important to determining the success of their organization’s cloud strategies. Considering those statistics, this challenge is evident as the operating model shifts toward cloud infrastructure and applications.
A survey conducted by 451 Research, Voice of the Enterprise: Cloud, Hosting & Managed Services, Cloud Skills 2022, found that 44% of respondents reported difficulty finding qualified candidates to address cloud skills gaps. In the absence of the necessary expertise, business risks may include:
- Delayed project timelines: Lack of expertise can lead to project delays and increased costs.
- Security vulnerabilities: Organizations may be exposed to significant risks if they do not understand the best practices for private cloud security. The Cloud Skills Report found that as a result of the cloud skills shortage, 43% of organizations have fallen behind on compliance and security.
- Increased operational costs: Inneficient private cloud management can result in higher operational expenses due to resource wastage and troubleshooting issues.
- Missed opportunities: Businesses may be unable to maximize the potential of their private cloud infrastructure if they lack skilled personnel.
