VMware Workspace ONE

3 Most-asked Questions about Workspace ONE & the Digital Workspace

It has been an amazing month since we first introduced Workspace ONE to the market, and I couldn’t be more excited. Nearly every day, I am having fantastic discussions with customers about the fundamental changes happening among people, apps and devices that are putting more pressure than ever on IT to serve the business. There are probably three recurring themes I hear in these discussions:

1. It seems so simple. Why couldn’t I do that before?digital workspace one webinar cta

That is certainly our goal: Make it look simple. See the app, open the app. In reality, there is a lot of complexity under the covers. The IDaaS industry was developed around a set of standards built for public web apps. Virtual app hosting and delivery was created to solve desktop security and management challenges, and mobile standards have been evolving rapidly in just a few short years. Pulling together an extensible, plug-able catalog infrastructure and then solving all of the SSO experience, email, messaging and DLP and configuration challenges has required some of the best minds across the industry, all of whom came to VMware to build the ultimate experience for the digital workspace.

2. I love the concept, but I’m too saddled with legacy problems to think about changing now.

While organizations recognize the changes happening around them, most enterprise organizations have a few hundred if not a few thousand applications already in use across their user population. The management and delivery of these applications is likely tied to managed images and some sort of software distribution and configuration management tools, all with well-worn processes and trained personnel in place to operate. The good news is that moving to a digital workspace does not have to be a rip and replace. There will be some Win32 apps that will live on for another 10-15 years that you won’t want to touch. That’s okay.

Workspace ONE is designed to complement existing management processes and then provide a path forward for both new applications and existing apps, whether by virtualizing and centrally delivering apps or through packaging and delivery through an enterprise mobility management (EMM) model. VMware is committed to building out the most comprehensive application delivery infrastructure, and no apps will be left behind.

3. We started a BYO (bring-your-own) program before, but it was too complex, hard to manage or hard to secure.

The BYO term certainly has seen its share of hype over the years. Whether wanting to formally move away from corporate-owned laptops or phones, allow more choice or just support casual access from unmanned devices, there are a lot of decisions to make. In the past, supporting a BYO program meant adopting multiple overlapping tools in an effort to provide access and security. You might have PIM tools from Good, Citrix XenApp for remote access to browser apps or Windows apps, a strong authentication provider and an IDaaS vendor to get access to SaaS apps. Trying to enforce policies across this tangle of solutions and shore up the holes has left many teams scratching their heads. Workspace ONE is designed holistically to create a unified experience and enforce a range of policies from BYO to corporate-owned and managed devices.
