VMware Horizon VMware App Volumes

VMware Horizon outperforms Citrix in Principled Technologies report

As worker demand for remote and hybrid work steadily increases, organizations are doubling down on efforts to build and manage an intrinsically secure and scalable infrastructure that lets employees work from anywhere. Therefore, more and more companies are relying on desktop and app virtualization to keep business moving forward. However, unprecedented demands are putting pressure on IT admins, budgets, and infrastructure. So, whether you have a virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) and virtual apps solution in place today or are exploring your options, how can you be sure that it’s working for you — cutting costs for the business, saving IT time, and delivering a positive user experience?

New research conducted by Principled Technologies and commissioned by VMware shows that VMware Horizon offers clear advantages over a competitive solution — Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops.

VMware Horizon vs. Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops

Principled Technologies tested the performance of Horizon and Citrix in three phases:

  • First, they measured the speed and ease of deploying non-persistent virtual desktops.
  • Next, they focused on app delivery in Horizon through VMware App Volumes and in Citrix through Citrix App Layering.
  • Finally, they tested the non-persistent virtual desktop application performance of both VMware and Citrix VDI environments.

In each phase, the VMware solution offered advantages over the Citrix solution, which could mean saving time for VDI admins and delivering a better experience to end users.

More specifically, virtual desktops scaled faster and virtual apps were provisioned more easily with Horizon. Virtual desktops were also deployed in less time and in fewer steps than Citrix, requiring fewer tasks to deploy apps in the testing environment. Last, but certainly not least, Horizon enabled simulated users to log into virtual desktops in less time.

The VMware advantage is clear

VMware Horizon offers a modern platform for secure delivery of virtual desktops and apps across the hybrid cloud. What’s more, VMware’s virtualization heritage provides Horizon with technologies that enable one-to-many provisioning and streamlined management of images, applications, profiles, and policies for an agile, lightweight, and modern digital workspace solution.

In fact, most organizations today are already running their Citrix environment on VMware infrastructure but aren’t realizing the benefits of the integration between the VMware vSphere® platform (on which their entire organization runs) and VMware Horizon. When combined with VMware Workspace ONE® and VMware NSX® Advanced Load Balancer™, VMware Horizon delivers end-to-end capabilities designed to save time and money while increasing user productivity and decreasing the burden on IT.
