The VMware EUC Technical Marketing team has been hard at work, and I am delighted to announce an update to the VMware Workspace ONE and VMware Horizon Reference Architecture.
The Workspace ONE and VMware Horizon Reference Architecture provides a framework and guidance for architecting using VMware Workspace ONE, VMware Horizon 7, or VMware Horizon Cloud Service on Microsoft Azure, whether using cloud-based deployments or installing on-premises. Design guidance is given for each product—with a corresponding component design chapter devoted to each product—followed by chapters that provide best practices for integrating the components into a complete platform.
This update adds new content, covering new topics, while existing content has been updated to include the latest guidance and features from the latest releases.
• Workspace ONE UEM – New design content was added on using Mobile Application Management (MAM) with bring your own device (BYOD). A whole new section was added to the Workspace ONE UEM Configuration appendix on using Intelligent Hub and Workspace ONE Apps on Android and iOS devices without also requiring full mobile device management (MDM).
• Workspace ONE Intelligence – Content was updated to add information about risk analytics. The app analytics was updated with information about the Workspace ONE Intelligence SDK.
• Unified Access Gateway – Design guidance was updated to incorporate new sizing guidance that also includes how to size and scale when combining multiple services on the same set of Unified Access Gateways. The recommendations were also updated to reflect the change to using Per-App Tunnel instead of Tunnel Proxy.
• Horizon Cloud Service on Microsoft Azure – The “Network Design” section was expanded, with multiple scenarios and network diagrams to describe how Horizon Cloud Service on Microsoft Azure supports the Microsoft Azure network architectures, including the hub-spoke network topology. The “Scalability and Availability” section was rewritten to more distinctly cover the two topics. New content was added to more clearly show a single-site design.
• Dynamic Environment Manager – All content was updated to use version 9.11. A whole new appendix on Dynamic Environment Manager configuration was added that covers a variety of recommendations for implementing, deploying, and managing.
• App Volumes – All sections were rewritten to reflect the changes and updates in App Volumes 4. Added a new section, “Replicate Application Packages and Reconstruct Relationships and Entitlements,” to “Appendix E: App Volumes Configuration.”
• Other Updates – Load balancing was changed to use the VMware NSX Advanced Load Balancer (formerly Avi Vantage by Avi Networks). The Workspace ONE Access integration details for some products was updated. A new section on the Horizon Control Plane and services it provides was added.
As with each update we do to the VMware Workspace ONE and VMware Horizon Reference Architecture, we test and validate the component design and build, service build, integration, and user workflow to ensure that all objectives are met and that use cases are delivered properly. This includes building out a fully production-ready environment to ensure that everything that is written about is practical and that real-world implementation is achievable.
Go read the VMware Workspace ONE and VMware Horizon Reference Architecture guide to understand the changes, absorb the new design guidance, and learn how to apply it all to your design.
