Today’s workers are on the move. Tablets, smartphones and a slew of new devices have entered the workplace. And more than half of enterprise and SMB organizations are looking to initiate bring your own device (BYOD) programs.
And while choice and the freedom to move is great when it comes to worker productivity, it also means a lot more added complexity for IT faced with tight budgets, many IT departments are trying to figure out the best approach to manage all of these new endpoints and protect corporate data as it is accessed across networks and locations-often by non-corporate owned devices.
So how do IT departments address these concerns while supporting the worker mobility and BYOD? Well virtualization, specifically desktop virtualization is one popular option. For many like Ken Hess in the BYOD Battle Royal,VDI is the bridge to mobility and BYOD, specifically allowing customers to embrace device diversity, better manage applications and updates and securely protect data and corporate IP. Dell has also studied this transformation in its evolving workforce study
At VMware, we decided to take this one step further with the VMware View Mobile Secure Desktop. Announced back in June, this solution and reference architecture are specifically designed to automate desktop management and provide end users with more advanced, policy driven and contextually aware access to virtual desktops in support of BYOD.
And just this past week, Dell and VMware have teamed up to create the Dell DVS Enterprise – Mobile Secure Desktop solution – a validated design that integrates technology from Dell, VMware and the Dell technology partner ecosystem. Read the Dell announcement here.
Dell DVS Enterprise is the infrastructure foundation for the Dell and VMware Mobile Secure Desktop solution. This enterprise capable infrastructure leverages a core set of Dell hardware and software components, notably VMware View and vSphere, vShield security services, and vCops management and monitoring components to protect data, monitor the infrastructure and secure access for virtually any end point device – all designed to provide optimal performance at the lowest cost per user.
The Dell DVS Enterprise architecture provides the flexibility to start with a small pilot and grow the solution as needs expand. The VMware powered solution can be built on either Dell PowerEdge 12g Rack or Blade servers to suit a customer’s requirements. The core configuration leverages SAN based Tier 1 storage powered by Dell EqualLogic PS6110XS hybrid array and Dell PowerEdge R720 servers.
This new Mobile Secure Desktop validated design provides customers with a complete end-to-end solution stack that takes the guesswork out of VDI deployments and allows organizations to support device diversity, mobile workers and BYOD quickly and effectively.
