VMware and NVIDIA are readying a preview of their shared, virtual desktop graphics technology at VMworld, which kicks off Sunday afternoon at San Francisco’s Moscone Center.
First described at the GPU Technology Conference in May, the technology involves a single NVIDIA VGX card serving up rich media and graphics to multiple virtual machines.
The technology preview – which can be seen at VMware’s Expo Floor booth 1223 – brings the hardware acceleration of graphics workloads to the virtual world. Prior to VGX, virtualization content could be delivered only from a CPU.
Adding an NVIDIA VGX card to the mix enables processing-hungry applications like HD video to become GPU accelerated. The result: more responsive, visually rich experiences when using and viewing multimedia and graphics-intensive applications. They appear the way you’re accustomed to experiencing them on dedicated desktop systems.
A rich, compelling visual experience is something that VMware and NVIDIA have been collaborating on for the past couple years, and now it’s very close to coming to market.
Dell will also be showing a similar tech preview in their booth at VMworld, demonstrating how a single NVIDIA VGX card can serve multiple users a variety of graphics-intensive applications.
