Educators Cut Costs, Streamline Management and Go Green with VMware View and VMware ThinApp

Exciting times here at VMware!  Earlier today we outlined new enhancements to PCoIP in the next version of VMware View that will lead to dramatic bandwidth improvements – opening up new use cases and offering greater choice for customer deployments.

We also announced growing momentum for desktop virtualization with VMware View and VMware ThinApp in education.  Educators are look to provide students with better access to applications across devices and expand the boundaries of learning to put campuses on a more sustainable path for the future.

An example of this trend is Western Wayne School District.  By virtualizing its desktops using VMware View and thin clients, Western Wayne has been able to update hardware and software district-wide.

The payoff?  The district now has the ability to ensure better access to applications and a consistent learning experience across all of its students.

And, they have not stopped there… The district is now building out one of the first “green” IT campuses in Pennsylvania with two thin client computer labs running VMware View desktops hosted from the High School nine miles away.

“The move to virtualization was driven by the need to meet limited budget resources, while still meeting technological and educational needs for students and faculty,” said Brian Seaman, Network Administrator, Western Wayne School District. “Not only did we see a cost savings to the technology budget after deploying VMware View, we also saw a reduction in energy use. A typical desktop uses 100 to 150 watts of power, while a thin client uses a tenth of that amount. Virtualized desktops are the best option for sustainability and manageability.”
