One Thing That Won’t Stay in Vegas – The Reason To Virtualize The Desktop

By Chris Westphal, Desktop Solutions Marketing, VMware

If you were at VMworld 2011 in Las Vegas you saw that there was a ton of activity around desktop and end-user computing (EUC).  If you weren’t able to make it to Vegas for the show, fear not, you can still check out the keynotes from Paul Maritz and Steve Herrod here:

NOTE: access to the ketnote videos requires free registration on the VMworld site.)

General Session Keynote Steve Herrod’s (@herrod) Tuesday keynote in particular featured desktop and EUC in a big way.  In the session Steve outlined the vision for EUC in addition to highlighting some new products, namely AppBlast and Octopus.  Our VP of Products, Vittorio Viarengo (@vmwjourney) was featured in a day in the life scenario showing some of the use cases for desktop and EUC.  For more on the VMware strategy around end-user computing you can check out this web page which provides details on our vision and the prescriptive journey for customers.

As we talk about the Vision for EUC one of the first steps for many customers is desktop virtualization which is helping address real challenges today.  These challenges range from those on the IT side which include things like cost and security to those on the end-user side which we all know is driven by a demand for a better experience and improved access to the stuff we need to get our work done.  We also can’t forget about the business where at the top they’re looking at the bottom line and how things like revenue and productivity can be improved.

In short there is no one single answer to the question of what challenge a customer is trying to overcome with desktop virtualization.  We see customers coming to VMware to solve a range of desktop and EUC related challenges.  We recently put out a paper as part of a toolkit covering the top 10 reasons customers are looking at desktop virtualization and you can check it out here.

What brought you to the EUC blog?  What challenges are you trying to address with desktop virtualization and EUC solutions?
