We released the VMware Workspace ONE app in February. The Workspace ONE app provides a convenient digital workspace to users across iOS, Android and Windows 10 devices. Users no longer have to remember individual app names and URLs. They simply launch the Workspace ONE app to find the apps they are entitled to. Users can also launch web apps, remote apps/desktops or download mobile apps from the Workspace ONE app catalog. The February release worked very well for VMware AirWatch managed devices, but didn’t solve bring-your-own-device (BYOD) and unmanaged device use cases.
Now, we’ve released the 2.0 version of the Workspace ONE app with exciting new features that help drive BYOD adoption in an organization. Let’s look at these features in detail.
Workspace ONE App Provides Standalone MAM Features
For apps that require a basic level of security assurance, you no longer have to ask users to enroll their devices into AirWatch. They can simply download the Workspace ONE app from app stores, login and start using it to launch entitled apps. They can also download the entitled public mobile apps to the device springboard from the catalog.
Internal mobile apps (uploaded to the AirWatch console) for download on unmanaged devices will be available through the catalog in the coming months.
Here are the three key benefits to the standalone mobile application management (MAM) capabilities with Workspace ONE:
- IT can distribute corporate-approved public mobile apps to unmanaged devices through the Workspace ONE app catalog.
- With Workspace ONE app installed, users can now single sign-on (SSO) into other apps provided by VMware, including AirWatch Browser and Content Locker, or any custom app built using the AirWatch SDK.
Currently available for iOS devices with support for other platforms coming soon. - When an unmanaged device is out of compliance (e.g. jail broken), the system quickly takes action to protect company data. When a violation is detected, all company data is removed from the Workspace ONE app, AirWatch productivity apps (e.g. Content Locker) and any custom app built using the AirWatch SDK.
Workspace ONE App Provides Adaptive Management
For apps that require a higher level of security assurance, the user can enroll their device into AirWatch right from Workspace ONE app instead of downloading the AirWatch agent. All entitled apps are listed in the catalog. Apps that require enrollment are marked with a lock icon. When the user tries to download an app with a lock icon, the enrollment process is triggered. For example, users can download a conferencing app, such as Webex, without enrollment. But they will be prompted to enroll when they try to download, for example, Salesforce1 from the catalog.
Here are the two key benefits to the adaptive management capabilities with Workspace ONE:
- It empowers the user to decide if and when they want to enroll their device, based on the application they want to access.
- Enrollment through the Workspace ONE app displays the privacy settings (what AirWatch can see and what it can’t) upfront, keeping the user informed through the enrollment process. Users can view the privacy settings by tapping on the “learn more” link before activating the security profile during enrollment.
