Want to learn what VMware Horizon licensing and packaging options are available? If so, we released an updated Horizon packaging and licensing white paper to provide you with everything you need to know about the Horizon product portfolio and corresponding SKUs. This guide provides an overview of general purchasing, deployment options, licensing models, product details, add-ons, and more.
For those who are not familiar with VMware Horizon, it’s a solution that lets you efficiently deliver virtual desktops and applications across on-premises and multi-cloud infrastructure, providing employees secure access to corporate resources anywhere, anytime, on any device. There are several ways to consume Horizon, via subscription and according to customers’ requirements. The Horizon pricing and packaging licensing white paper outlines those various options. Here’s a quick rundown of the detailed information provided in the white paper:
- General purchasing. You can purchase VMware Horizon directly from VMware, or through VMware distributors or partners.
- Deployment options. Horizon can be deployed on premises and/or natively in the cloud. Delivering virtual desktops and apps on premises gives you the responsibility to manage each layer of your VDI and published app deployment. Delivering virtual desktops and apps from the cloud transfers some of the management responsibilities (infrastructure layers) away from you as a customer, so you only have to manage your desktops and apps.
- Licensing model. You can choose between a per-named user model or a per-concurrent-connection model. Per-named user (NU) is for staff that require dedicated access to a virtual machine throughout the day. Per-concurrent connection (CCU) is for a high number of users who share machines throughout the day, such as students and shift workers. A concurrent connection is the total number of users accessing or using the software at any given time to maintain an active connection to their workspace or desktop through an endpoint device.
- Package details. Horizon subscription editions are segmented by Horizon Subscription Term and Horizon Subscription SaaS options. We also have products available to purchase, like App Volumes and ThinApp.
- Subscription Upgrade Program (SUP) for Horizon. For existing Horizon perpetual customers, this program allows you to leverage your investment to upgrade to Subscription SaaS or Term licenses, such as Horizon Universal Subscription.
- Add-on products. You have the option to purchase add-ons like vSphere or vSAN. There are more add-on products within the Anywhere Workspace solution, like Workspace ONE, as add-ons. In addition, bundling is an option, like the Workspace ONE Enterprise SaaS bundle.
Horizon Subscription SaaS
Many customers are taking advantage of our Horizon Subscription SaaS editions, which provide a single, flexible entitlement to Horizon technology, services, and deployment options: on premises, in the cloud, or hybrid and multi-cloud. You can choose from several SaaS editions depending on your needs. The subscriptions available in order of most inclusive features to fewer inclusive features are:
- Horizon Universal Subscription. Our most flexible option allows you to deploy virtual desktops and apps on multiple clouds, with a full suite of cloud management services from the SaaS-based Horizon Control Plane for multi-cloud deployments. Also included are other premium solutions, such as App Volumes for lifecycle application management, Dynamic Environment Manager (DEM) that you can use to personalize virtual desktops and apps, and Workspace ONE Intelligence for visibility and analytics.
- Horizon Enterprise Plus Subscription. This plan offers advanced desktop (VDI) and app delivery coupled with cloud management services for a single cloud deployment. You cannot deploy DaaS using Horizon Cloud Service on Microsoft Azure here, but it does also include App Volumes DEM. End-user usage data is also not collected with our “Plus” editions.
- Horizon Standard Plus Subscription. This is a cost-effective option that provides premium desktop delivery with cloud management services for a single cloud deployment. As with the Horizon Enterprise Plus Subscription, you cannot deploy Horizon Cloud Service on Microsoft Azure. App Volumes is not included in this edition.
- Horizon Apps Universal Subscription. This option provides powerful app delivery through RDSH, with a full suite of cloud management services for hybrid cloud deployment. Horizon Universal Subscription and Horizon Apps Universal Subscription are the only two SaaS subscriptions that entitle you to all deployment options. In this edition, App Volumes is also included.
- Horizon Apps Standard Subscription. This edition offers simple RDSH app delivery with basic cloud management services for on-premises or cloud deployment. It does not include App Volumes.
