Forward-thinking organizations are using VMware Horizon to deliver desktops and apps to enable collaboration, stay compliant, and provide anywhere access to data and apps. Many of these organizations (maybe even you!) are joining us at VMware Explore 2023 Las Vegas, and we’re excited to share one of these stories in the breakout session “Consolidating Your VDI and App Platform from Citrix to Horizon.” Our technical marketing expert Rob Beekmans will be partnering with Simon Cottrell from ebb3 to showcase how a British car manufacturer recognizes the benefits of integrating their application management strategy into VMware’s Digital Workspace, enabling collaboration with supply chains, and optimizing workflows with large data sets.
Here’s a sneak peek of the topics that will be covered in the “Consolidating Your VDI and App Platform from Citrix to Horizon” Explore session, plus some insights we’ll share from the British car manufacturer case study:
- Embracing the Digital Workspace to Support More Use Cases
- Simplifying Application and Image Management
- Leveraging Hybrid Cloud
- Improving Security and Compliance
1. Embracing the digital workspace to support more use cases
In today’s evolving landscape, a digital workspaces strategy is needed more than ever — and app and desktop virtualization are part of that. More and more, enterprises find themselves deploying hybrid to scale out and move workloads to where the data resides or to prevent outages. Getting to the right balance in a hybrid world with on-premises or in the cloud is crucial. However, supporting these applications and workflows introduces additional complexity. A British car manufacturer uses their VMware Horizon environment to support their product development process, working with their wider supply chain and their internal computer aided design (CAD) users. This allows them to enhance their high-performance computing (HPC) simulation workflows by moving the applications into the data center, using more powerful GPUs, so they can interact faster with large data sets.
2. Simplifying application and image management
Today’s organizations rely on a wide range of applications, from common business apps to specialized design and engineering tools. To meet this diverse application landscape, a modern digital workspace must provide secure, customizable, and consistent user experiences. Achieving this requires automated provisioning that presents users with their required applications and tailored workflows, alongside supporting application data. All of this is delivered seamlessly with Horizon Apps, without the hassle of complex configuration and management. The British car manufacturer has approximately 350 unique users, with specific applications only being used by less than 10 of these users. VMware App Volumes Apps on Demand allows for simplified image management as only common applications are included in the image. Other applications are deployed with VMware App Volumes Apps on Demand and are attached to the user environment the moment the user starts the application. There are many benefits:
- fewer images to manage, but also cleaner images for better performance,
- applications deployed by App volumes are updated faster allowing for users to be more productive, and
- security patches for applications are more easily applied without the need to update the whole image.
3. Leveraging hybrid cloud
A modern digital workspace needs flexibility. With app and desktop virtualization across private, public, and VMware clouds, the possibilities are endless. Need specialized workloads? No problem! Many cloud providers now cater to specific applications, ensuring the best experience possible. Say goodbye to location limitations as we make deploying and managing public and private cloud resources a breeze. This British car manufacturer is looking to use specialist cloud providers for their HPC workloads, and to move standard business application users onto a more cost-effective cloud environment, as they do not need to be located within the private cloud data center.
4. Improving security and compliance
A modern digital workspace offers unparalleled security, especially when adopting a zero trust model. When collaborating with supply chains, organizations lack control over client endpoints. However, with digital workspace technologies like NSX and Horizon, individual access to network resources can be tightly controlled on a per-user basis, even when accessing published applications. NSX automation seamlessly integrates with existing configurations, automating, and managing access to resources and applications. Say hello to enhanced security and seamless access control in the modern digital workspace! This British car manufacturer is investigating the use of VMware NSX for Horizon to provide additional flexibility over and above external network firewall.
