VMware Workspace ONE By Product Desktops

IRS Approves VDI & BYO for Remote Access to FTI Systems

Faster, simpler and more secure tax reporting is now achievable for federal, state and local agencies thanks to new Internal Revenue Service (IRS) guidelines.

While virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) was previously approved by the IRS for remote access to Federal Tax Information (FTI), the September 2016 release of IRS Pub 1075 adds the approval for the use of personally-owned devices to remotely access FTI via VDI.

This is great news for federal, state, and local agencies seeking to increase security and compliance, extend access, improve productivity and lower costs by leveraging VDI and personally-owned devices for access to FTI via the VMware Secure Digital Workspace for Government.

A Single, Secure Solution

digital-workspace-for-dummiesThe Secure Digital Workspace for Government—powered by VMware Workspace ONE—is a transformative end-user computing (EUC) solution for agencies seeking to:

  • Modernize IT infrastructure;
  • Strengthen data security;
  • Ensure Continuity of Operations (COOP); and
  • Mobilize agency workflows to advance missions.

VMware’s Digital Workspace for Government solution integrates identity, application and enterprise mobility management into secure, unified employee workspaces available across any computing environment.

As part of the solution, VMware Horizon technology streamlines the delivery, protection and management of virtual desktops and applications. Horizon also helps contain costs and ensures that end users can work anytime, anywhere and across any device. The solution transforms static desktops into secure, digital workspaces that can be delivered on demand.

IT can easily provision virtual or remote desktops and applications through a single VDI and application virtualization platform, streamlining management and easily entitling end users—while ensuring data protection. Agency IT teams can also consolidate the control, delivery and protection of EUC resources with policies that dynamically adapt to the user’s computing environment—whether that’s a VDI desktop or agency-owned or BYO device.

Extending Mobility Investment

The IRS update is welcome news to agencies already investing in mobility.

Mecklenburg County in North Carolina deployed VMware technologies to securely mobilize and empower nearly 6,000 county employees. As part of the North Carolina county’s “One Person, One Device” initiative, executives,  social workers, parks and recreation employees and food service inspectors use phones, tablets and virtual desktops to securely access and input information on the go. Now, more productive employees reach and serve constituents more effectively, while delivering the county an average of $3.2 million per year in cost avoidance.
