[Video] Unified Endpoint Management & Windows 10 Explained

In this new video interview, Sumit Dhawan explores and defines the next phase of end-user computing: unified endpoint management and Windows 10.

Q: As companies move from IT silos toward the digital space, how is the IT department changing?

Sumit: This is the challenge within IT, because the world of silos has been built over the course of the last 8-10 years. They have a desktop team … and a mobile team. Then, there’s someone doing Windows applications, and then someone who’s doing identity, which is completely off on a separate charter.  That can’t be sustainable. It’s adding cost. It’s adding complexity. So now, the technologies and the solutions are there for IT to take a step back and think about how they could restructure their systems, their processes, their teams and cut the cost out.

Usually when you look at a new technology, IT is thinking, “Is it going to cut cost? Or is it going to improve experience? Or is it going to improve security?” The best part of this sort of solution is it removes the silos as a result. It improves end-user experience. It lowers the cost. And it improves security. It’s a transformational journey for IT, and I think they can do so with Windows 10.

Q: Tell us about unified endpoint management.

Sumit: Unified endpoint management is basically a bit step toward dissolving these silos. You don’t need a mobile expert, and you don’t need a desktop expert. Windows 10 really is designed to be a mobile operating system. It’s designed to be managed from the cloud, just like a mobile device is. You don’t bring your iPhone and connect it to your Active Directory, so why do you have to do that with your Windows 10 machine? Information getting accessed from both of these devices is now equally important and needs to be secured in the same way.

On the other hand, a new range of devices is coming in. IoT devices, whether it’s smart glasses or wearables or tablets and Surfaces, all these devices are going to come into the workplace. This is an opportunity. Rather than building three different stacks of management, you have one platform for managing all these different devices. And that’s what we call unified endpoint management.

Q: You gave one of the opening keynotes addresses here at Connect (Atlanta). Walk us through some of the highlights of your talk?

Sumit: We kicked (Connect) off with a great industry day. Today was unveiling all the innovations that the team’s working on. We showcased a lot of technologies, how we went from having this VMware AirWatch technology and product, turning it into a true platform. Now, with every possible operating systems (OS) of the future—whether it’s iOS, Android for phones and tablets, Windows 10 for laptops, MacOS and Chrome OS—all of these OS’ provide a consistent way of doing management with APIs. And we have made it so that AirWatch becomes this platform layer, and that enables us to truly provide a unified experience.

Think about it: customers are dealing with all of these different platforms. And all customers are different. They’re all heterogeneous worlds that they’re living in. But they need to provide homogeneity, so end users can get this consistent end-user experience. That’s what we did with VMware Workspace ONE. It’s a much more end-user friendly experience, designed for day zero enrollment to access any application with one single key.

We also showcased a new app, VMware Boxer for Enterprise. It’s all optimized for how people use (the app). We really studied that and optimized a lot of workflows as part of our mail, and it runs securely without having to enroll the device.

We extended our platform for management and security, as well. We unveiled our unified endpoint management, expanding to Windows 10. Also, some new technology previews on how apps can be distributed in a much more mobile-like way in a desktop environment. That, to me, changes the game. Customer now have one platform for managing all devices and IoT—all can be managed together.
