VMware App Volumes

VMware at Citrix Synergy: Quick Recap of a Great Show!

Las Vegas was buzzing a couple weeks ago with customers from all over the world attending Citrix Synergy. Citrix hosted their annual conference, and VMware joined many of our peers and customers in hosting our own booth on the showroom floor.

For those who were able to swing by our booth, we demonstrated many new innovations, starting with VMware App Volumes.

App Volumes helps enhance Citrix XenApp and XenDesktop with real-time application delivery and user management. Customers also were able to see demos of our Horizon family of products, including VMware Horizon 7, Horizon Air and Horizon FLEX. We showed our enterprise mobility management (EMM) capabilities with VMware AirWatch. Finally, we showed customers how they can access desktop and mobile apps and services on-demand with VMware Workspace ONE—the consumer simple and enterprise secure platform that delivers any app on any device by integrating identity, application and enterprise mobility management.

But what stood out most in our booth? That would be the lines of people eager to get a demonstration of Project Orion. This project is a technology preview of VMware Instant Clone capability that works with Citrix XenDesktop. Project Orion gives Citrix admins the ability to clone and deploy XenDesktop virtual desktops at a rapid pace, eliminating traditional reconfiguration, customization and boot cycle steps when creating pools of desktops. Coupled with App Volumes and VMware User Environment Manager, Citrix shops now have the potential for just-in-time desktops—the ability for IT to rapidly and dynamically provision desktops, apps, and settings, so users can have access resources on demand and as needed.

Customers at Synergy were constantly lined up to see demos of this capability and were able to take advantage of talking to our engineers to get a deeper look at this technology preview.

Did you happen to miss the demo or weren’t able to make Synergy this year? No problem. You can watch a demo of Project Orion here and below.

We are still developing Instant Clone capability for Citrix XenDesktop, so we’d love to hear your feedback (just comment on this blog). We have also posted a few more videos on using App Volumes in Citrix environments.
