We just released new VMware Horizon View clients that are optimized for VMware Horizon View 5.2!
Optimized for Best Performance with Horizon View 5.2
The latest VMware Horizon View clients take full advantage of the optimizations in Horizon View 5.2.
Horizon View 5.2 offers new PCoIP client side caching improvements. With Horizon View 5.2, only 90 MB of client side cache is needed to get the equivalent performance of using 250 MB with View 5.1 and earlier. This change further optimizes View performance on mobile devices.
The new VMware Horizon View 5.3 client for Windows now supports Microsoft Lync unified communications when used with Horizon View 5.2.
Also, the latest VMware Horizon View clients are now localized for traditional Chinese in addition to the previously supported English, French, German, Japanese, Korean, and simplified Chinese languages.
Zero Install HTML Access to Your Horizon View Desktop
We have had many requests to provide zero install access to Horizon View virtual desktops. Today, we are proud to release HTML Access, which gives you easy access to your Horizon View desktop from almost any HTML5 compatible browser. HTML Access allows you to connect to your Horizon View desktop through the updated Horizon View portal or through the Horizon Workspace.
HTML Access is ideal for quick access to your Horizon View desktop from home or a public location where you can’t install the Horizon View client software on the computer you want to use to access your desktop.
Here is a video by Andre Leibovici that shows off the new HTML Access feature of Horizon View 5.2:
Stay tuned next week for an in-depth look at HTML Access.
Windows is Easier on iOS and Android with Unity Touch
We have spoken to many View customers and they have been said clearly that they need Windows apps for their mobile users, but that those apps are too difficult to use on mobile devices. Unity Touch is about making Windows apps easier to use on mobile devices. With Unity Touch, users can easily browse, search, and open Windows applications and files; choose favorite applications and files; and easily switch between running applications all without the Windows start menu or task bar.
For a quick introduction to Unity Touch, see Scott Davis’ video introducing key parts of the Unity Touch technology:
Stay tuned later today for an Introducing Unity Touch blog post for more details.
HTML Access and Unity Touch Require Horizon View 5.2 Feature Pack 1
If you are a VMware Horizon View Administrator, you need to update your View virtual desktop environment to VMware Horizon View 5.2 and add the new Horizon View 5.2 Feature Pack. The new Horizon View 5.2 Feature Pack 1 is a free update for all Horizon View 5.2 customers and available on the Horizon View downloads page.
Once you have migrated to Horizon View 5.2 with the new Horizon View 5.2 Feature Pack, you will have enabled Unity Touch for your Horizon View iOS and Android users and have the option to enable HTML Access for all your users.
See the “VMware Horizon View Feature Pack Installation and Administration Guide” for more details.
What Else Is New in the VMware Horizon View Clients?
In addition to being optimized for VMware Horizon View 5.2, the new Horizon View clients are also better than ever when used with older versions of VMware View.
The new Mac client now has support for Multiple Displays, so you can now use up to two monitors with your View desktops on the Mac. In addition, we now have Retina support so you can choose a default scaled desktop or set the desktop to take all available resolution of your Retina MacBook Pro. Finally, the Mac client has USB improvements including splitting multi-function devices correctly.
The mobile clients for iOS and Android now work with voice dictation. Presentation Mode for iOS is now improved to better negotiate the best display resolution when connected to an external display and there is a full screen mode option for Android to give you more active resolutions for your Windows apps.
