Let us now look at what’s new this time around:
We are very excited to share some of the new features and capabilities of VMware Cloud on AWS. In case you missed the VMworld session about ‘Accelerate Your Hybrid Cloud Journey with VMware Cloud on AWS, What’s New’, we have got it covered for you. Watch this on-demand session to learn more.
Introduction of VMware Cloud Disaster Recovery for an on-demand DR service:
We are very pleased to announce a new offering called VMware Cloud Disaster Recovery – this service will offer on-demand disaster recovery (DR) that will be delivered as an easy-to-use SaaS solution, with cloud economics. It will combine cost-efficient cloud storage with a simple SaaS-based management for IT resiliency at scale, and customers will benefit from a ‘pay when you need’ capacity model for DR resources.
- On-demand: Instant power-on of VMs, pilot light capacity (optional), no VM format conversions, and rapid ransomware recovery experiments that will deliver a fast recovery experience.
- Cloud economics: Cost-efficient cloud storage coupled with a ‘pay when you need’ capacity model for a lower total cost of ownership DR solution. Customers will be able to leverage efficient built-in failback as delta changes alone are transferred back to the production site.
- Easy to use: Customers will also be able to use the same consistent, familiar VMware environment and management tools on the DR site, removing the need for new training or operational processes. A SaaS-based management experience will eliminate the need to deploy and lifecycle manage the DR software. Further, continuous DR health checks and built-in audit reports will deliver a simplified operational experience.
For more information about this service, please read this blog post.
The combination of VMware Cloud Disaster Recovery and our already available VMware Site Recovery in VMware’s DR portfolio will enable customers to leverage DR protection for a wide range of IT services, from important to critical to mission critical. VMware Cloud Disaster Recovery will be able to protect a very broad set of IT services in a cost-efficient manner, with fast recovery capabilities. VMware Site Recovery can protect mission critical IT services that require lower RPO.
Enhancements to VMware Site Recovery:
VMware Site Recovery simplifies traditional DR and delivers a high-performance service. The service automates workload recovery in a DR event between on-premises data centers and VMware Cloud on AWS, as well as between different instances of VMware Cloud on AWS. Built on top of enterprise-grade DR tools (VMware Site Recovery Manager, vSphere Replication) and global cloud infrastructure (AWS), the service provides an end-to-end disaster recovery solution that is quick to deploy and leverages existing know-how. New enhancements will include:
- Monthly billing payment option for VMware Site Recovery 1- and 3-year subscriptions: Customers will be able to leverage monthly billing payment option for a 1 – and 3-year subscription option for additional payment flexibility. This will only be applicable for eligible direct purchases from VMware using the payment by invoice method and purchases via Managed Service Providers that are part of the VMware Cloud Provider Program. It will not be available via resellers. Customers are advised to contact their VMware sales or VMware Cloud Provider partner representative for eligibility.
Introduction of vSAN compression for Amazon EC2 i3en.metal for VMware Cloud on AWS:
VMware Cloud on AWS SDDC clusters based on i3en.metal instance type are optimized for data-intensive workloads requiring high random I/O access such as relational databases and workloads that require end to end security. Based on 2nd Generation Intel® Xeon® Scalable processor, these new instances deliver >4x the raw storage capacity at roughly half the cost per GB of storage per host of current offerings on average. With this release, vSAN compression is enabled to improve the usable capacity – mileage will vary depending on the workload requirements. The new “Compression only” feature will enable customers to take advantage of space efficiency techniques while minimizing the tradeoff with performance that is typically associated with these techniques. Using the “compression only” option will also reduce a failure domain in comparison to clusters running deduplication and compression, as a failed capacity device in a cluster using the “compression only” feature will affect just the discrete device, and not the entire disk group. This new feature will also help improve space efficiency, but with minimal overhead and operational changes when compared to a cluster not running any form of cluster-based space efficiency.
Ability to deploy select Microsoft Software from VMware:
In accordance with Microsoft’s October 1, 2019 licensing changes, (described in this earlier blog), VMware now supplies Windows Server and Microsoft SQL Server Enterprise licenses for use on VMware Cloud on AWS when customers are not able to migrate their existing licenses using BYOL or license mobility. Customers can select from pre-packaged OVA instances, ISO binaries to create their own instances, or import their own customized images for use on VMware Cloud on AWS. Once licensed, customers can deploy unlimited number of instances on a cluster by cluster basis. The licenses are:

Migration improvements with VMware HCX:
VMware HCX is an application mobility platform designed for simplifying application migration, workload rebalancing and business continuity across datacenters and cloud environments. Key new capabilities for VMware Cloud on AWS will include, at no additional cost:
- VMware HCX Mobility Optimized Networking: For virtual machines migrated using VMware HCX from a source location to VMware Cloud on AWS, this capability will enable the cloud-side VMs on the HCX extended network to route traffic optimally through the cloud-side first-hop gateway instead of being routed through the source environment router. This may help avoid a hairpin or a trombone effect. Policy routes will allow control over which traffic is routed locally using the cloud gateway versus traffic that goes out through the source gateway. For more information, please refer to the documentation here.
- VMware HCX Mobility Groups and integration with VMware vRealize Network Insight: Mobility groups will enable customers to structure their migration waves based on their business requirements. It will support assembling one or more virtual machines into logical sets, for execution and monitoring of migrations as a group. With Mobility Groups, combined with the integration of HCX with vRealize Network Insight, customers will have the flexibility to manage migrations for sets of virtual machines by application, network, pod, or other aspects of the customer’s environment. For more information, please refer to the documentation here.
- VMware HCX Replication Assisted vMotion: This capability will use the HCX Interconnect appliance along with replication and vMotion technologies to provide large scale, parallel live migrations, with the ability to specify a switchover window. Once a set of VMs is selected for migration, VMware HCX would do the initial syncing, and would continue to replicate the delta changes until the switchover window is reached. In addition, multiple VMs will be replicated simultaneously. When the replication phase reaches the switchover window, a delta vMotion cycle will be initiated to do a quick, live switchover which will happen serially. With this capability, migrations will be more resilient to latency and varied network and service conditions during the initial sync and continuous replication sync. Further, large chunks of data synchronization will also allow for smaller delta vMotion cycles, paving way for large numbers of VMs switching over in a maintenance window. Note that migrating VMs with this capability will be supported for vSphere 5.1 at the source site. For more information, please refer to the documentation here
