After successfully supporting thousands of Hands-on Labs (HOL) at VMworld and Dell Technologies World in 2017 and 2018, VMware IT decided to leverage its flagship on-demand cloud service to support the entire VMworld event portal. The move enables the team to seamlessly burst workloads to the cloud as needed, while delivering the high performance, scalability, and resilience these mission-critical applications require.
VMware Cloud on AWS was the logical choice when VMware IT was looking to integrate public cloud into existing operations and extend on-premises data centers to the cloud. The heightened seasonal computing requirements surrounding VMworld and other events provided a perfect use case – allowing for bursts to the cloud during event-related spikes in demand.
With VMware Cloud on AWS, the IT team can easily scale to support high usage and roll back after the surge in activity. Moving forward, they can burst from private to public clouds and back as needed, regardless of the workload, providing tremendous flexibility for planned and unplanned events. The team plans to migrate additional critical applications to the hybrid cloud environment, including customer blogs, enterprise resource planning apps, and virtual desktop infrastructure.
VMware IT has also increased resiliency and improved disaster recovery by leveraging VMware Site Recovery, the disaster recovery-as-a-service (DRaaS) add-on in VMware Cloud on AWS.
