What’s New

The fleet management and critical control operations were distributed across various separate standalone virtual appliances. VCF 9.1 completely centralizes these functions into a single runtime layer.

The primary structural shift when jumping from VCF 9.0.x to 9.1 involves:

  • Consolidating into VCF Operations.
  • Bootstrapping the VCF Management Services Cluster, VCF 9.1 introduces VCF Management Services to provide a unified architecture for centralized lifecycle and operational functionalities. The services runtime of the initial VCF instance hosts the fleet-level components responsible for global operations, alongside its own instance-level components. Additionally, every VCF instance includes a dedicated services runtime that hosts instance-level management services for executing local tasks.

Architectural Guardrails: Planning for Success

VCF 9.1 introduces a high degree of configuration validation to ensure smooth upgrade of the environment. Before staging any installation payloads, ensure your pre-upgrade environment meets these strict criteria:

  • Strict DNS and Case Sensitivity: VCF 9.1has an improvement in checks with absolute network precision. All existing and new network assignments must utilize strictly lowercase Forward and Reverse DNS records to prevent switchover validation errors.
  • Pre-allocated Network Staging: One must pre-allocate dedicated static IP addresses and map Forward/Reverse DNS entries for your new VCF Management Services (configured as an IP Pool using strict CIDR notation in the UI) and the headless VCF License Server.
  • Backups: Backing up your VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF) environment requires configuring both native file-based backups for vCenter and SFTP targets for SDDC Manager and VCF Operations(Imaged Based backup).
